SAILOR'S BLANKET
Last summer, my first Min Pin crossed the Rainbow Bridge. In his memory, I decided to crochet and donate 40 blankets for Min Pin Rescue. A few people heard about my plan and decided to help. Someone suggested that I keep doing it and get as many people involved as possible. That is how "Sailor's Blanket" came to be, keeping the memory of my little "Sailor-man" alive.
Sailor's Blanket is my effort to provide a warm, soft blanket to dogs waiting to be adopted. So many caring people across North America have offered to help, including the Girl Scouts and the Crochet Guild of America.
With their help, Sailor's Blanket has been able to provide Min Pin Rescue with over 100 blankets and GPI was recently sent a box full of blankets, pillows and towels from a kind woman who read about my project in the local newspaper. Those who cannot knit, crochet or sew have offered to purchase blankets and send them to the dogs.
These blankets help ease the transition into Foster Care and go with the dogs once adopted to provide a sense of comfort and security while adjusting to their new home. It is also a special gift to the families who adopt, knowing that their Greyhound was loved, thought of and cared for until they found each other.
Although I choose to crochet the blankets I donate, they do not have to be homemade. You make the choice: new or gently used, homemade or purchased. Because the Greyhounds are on the larger side ;-) I recommend single-bed blankets (4-5 feet long and 3-4 feet wide if you are making them). It is my goal to collect and distribute additional 1000 blankets before the stroke of Midnight on New Year's Eve. Just follow your heart.
