"That could explain a few things," said Rose. " The killer could have been trying to net the scarlafish and been surprised by the victim. Killer stabs victim and slips him into the drink, figuring that the sharks might finish him and make it look like he fell in accidentally while trying to steal the fish himself."

"Maybe. But then why return the storage case to the lab?"

"A panicky mistake." Rose leaned forward. "I think I know who did this."
The following day, Rose watched as officers placed Charles Denny in a cell at the local jail.

So what made you suspect Charles Denny?

Rose turned to the man, The lack of condensation in the dehumidifier's catch pan.
She further explained, Charles Denny said he couldn't have heard the scream because he had been running his dehumidifier all evening. The catch pan, however, had very little water in it, since I heard a condensation drop hit the bottom of the pan rather than a layer of water. If Denny had been back in his office since before seven, when the guard saw him in his rounds, and had not left it or used the window, he could not have emptied the pan in the meantime. Also the guard confirmed that the dehumidifier had been off during his earlier rounds.

I believe that the dehumidifier had therefore only recently been turned on. And after looking at his accounts, Denny, needed money and had attempted to steal the scarlafish and been surprised by the janitor. After returning to his office by the back stairs, he turned on his dehumidifier to give himself a reason for avoiding the crime scene.
