| In 1995 we read an article in a newspaper on the plight of racing greyhounds after their careers had finished, the unnecessary cruelty and neglect of these animals really did touch us, we decided to look further into this and not long after took on our first retired greyhound aged six We then made inquiries into setting up a branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust (UK) here in the Channel Islands in order that we could assist further in helping to rehome other unfortunate greyhounds Our aim was to find suitable homes for some of the 10,000 dogs which are discarded each year from racetracks around the United Kingdom, Since 1995 we have homed 53 dogs in Jersey, 5 in Guernsey and 1 in Sark, we ourselves have 8 Greyhounds Hucklebury and Squibby aged 11 1/2 years Bosun aged 10 1/2 Paris aged 9 years Turk aged 7 years Flynn aged 6 years Rio 3 years Awesome 4 years Sadly our Chappie, Pongo-Pongo, O-Jay and Douglas and our German Shepherd Orchid have now passed away, but these loving dogs have given us so much pleasure, they are huge part of our lives and we campaign to find suitable homes in the Islands whenever the opportunity arises Our first dog back in 1995 was called Greenfield Chappie, 'Chappie' and we have never looked back, these dogs bring us so much happiness, we are a family We work hard to spread the message of how Greyhounds can enhance peoples lives but we are strict on the homes these dogs go to, even though some greyhounds can live with cats many are unsuitable with them, we have to be 100% sure that we are happy with the homes and the potential owners We have had articles in the newspapers and also a feature on Channel Television in order to promote the benefits of re-homing a retired greyhound, we also work closely with the Jersey Animal Shelter and vets, many of our own dogs have in fact have been successful blood donors on several occasions We meet many of our adopted dog owners on a weekly basis, we like to stay in touch as often as possible, we have so much satisfaction on seeing the happy dog owners and the dogs adapting to their new homes and owners, we are also on hand for any help or advice that the adopted owners have, Greyhounds are special and therefore have special needs, their main needs are love, affection and a settee! Many prospective owners think Greyhounds need a lot of excerise when really 20 mins in the morning and at night is enough, these wonderful dogs would much rather have your love and affection all day, although they will take as much interest as you wish |
