Jeter was my second foster..thought I was going to fail fostering 101 with this guy. The day his new family was just coming to meet him I cried all morning, it didn't help that when I came down stairs that morning he decided it was time to start Rooing at me!! He just talked up a storm! Jeters new family came to see him that afternoon and there was no way they could not fall in love with this guy...perfect house manners, sweet and friendly, housebroken, played with his toys...what more could you ask for! They fell hard for him, I drove myself nuts wondering if I should have adopted him myself, but the way he cuddled up to the Dad made me realize he could love someone else as much as he loved me...sometimes these dogs can be such traders! Jeter has found the best home ever and is getting the royal treatment...Read what his new family has to say about life with Jeter!!! Jeter (Gary) was adopted on 06/18/03 "Thanks" to Harold, Sherry & Summer of Roanoke, VA. Star City Greyhounds of Roanoke handled the adoption for Jeter. Jeter family update:06/22/03 Old Jeter boy is having a fun time here. He cried for you on Friday night. Actually it was more of a sad whine. I felt so sorry for him. Poor baby. He slept well Friday night and was up at 6:30 with Summer taking him out and about. Those two are definitely bonding. He ate a good breakfast of a small can of Cesar dog food mixed with the dry you sent, and some shredded cheddar. Then, he went out again to meet everyone on our street. Took a nice long nap in the afternoon, then we took him to PetSmart to buy some canned food to mix with the dry and to get him a new collar -- he was wearing Frankie's and he needed a new one of his own. We also got a tag engraved with his name (Jeter) and our phone number. After that, he went with us to Brewster's to get a small dish of vanilla ice cream, which he LOVED! There we ran into several of our friends, so they got to meet him. Once we got back home, around 9:30, Jeter was so tired he just crashed on his Orvis dog bed. And he slept like a baby until 7:45 this morning. Today he seems more comfortable with us and being here. I still haven't seen any rooing but I am sure that is to come. Gosh, we just love the heck out of him. And he is SOOOOO much like Frankie, our last greyhound, in his personality. It's really strange. I'll give you more updates on the Jetermeister soon. Take care -- Love, Sherry Update: July 1, 2003 Guess what? We taught Jeter a new trick tonight. He can now eat steak off of a fork! Cool, huh? He loved every bite, too. (And he had his very own filet.) What can I say? We are so bad. Can't tell you in words how much we love this sweet dog. He is such a funny boy. And showing more and more of his true personality everyday. He is the BEST! Just wanted to let you know that he is in good hands and that we love him to death and are spoiling him good. Warmest regards, Sherry :-) Anyone wishing they were this lucky greyhound!!!! Filet Mignon off a fork....Yummy!!! UPDATE ON THE LUCKIEST GREYHOUND EVER!!!! SEPT. 1, 2003 Check out Jeters Florida Vacation this summer! We had the most wonderful summer vacation with Jeter. First, we went to the Royal Pacific at Universal Studios, Florida. This place is so pet friendly -- they even have room service and a special place for doggie walks. Jeter loved it! They gave us a beeper at check-in, just in case we were out of the room and they needed to get in contact with us. On at least one day, Jeter cried for us -- not enough to get beeped, but one of the other pet owners on our floor (I think everyone on our floor had a dog) said that he must have terrible separation anxiety because when they walked by our room they could hear him crying. Jeter made many friends as everyone wanted to pet him and ask about his background. (Is he one of those retired racedogs? Is he hard to take care of? Does he want to run all the time? Does he eat large amounts of food? Are greyhounds hyper?) The questions and comments were constant during our stay. I was more than happy to share my 15 years of greyhound expertise with everyone. Although one man was adamantly sure that Jeter was not a full-blooded greyhound because of his spots. He said that Jeter had to be half greyhound and half dalmatian. I suppose he had never seen a hound with ticking. You really must go to the Royal Pacific, with or without a dog. It is a beautiful place! Largest pool in central Florida, a five minute walk or boat ride to the parks and to City Walk, four restaurants on site -- but the best part of all is that you get to go to the front of all the lines in both Universal theme parks just by showing your room key. We never waited longer than 5-10 minutes to ride anything. And the wait time for one ride was 160 minutes! Check it out: http://themeparks.universalstudios.com/orlando/website/resort_hotels/rp_amenities.html I would highly recommend this place to everyone! When we left Orlando and went to Daytona Beach, Jeter took a while to get adjusted, especially since we decided to stay an additional two days and had to be moved down two floors because the hotel was painting the entire floor where we had stayed the first three nights. I think Jeter found this part of the trip confusing. We moved but it looked like the same place to him. Hmmmm . . . . Late one night when Summer and I were taking Jeter for his final walk of the evening, we took him down to the beach. He was Mr. Inquisitive and trotted as fast as he could run to the edge of the water. He was mesmerized by the ocean and the beach and we almost couldn't drag him off it. Next morning, he wanted to make a beeline for the beach, so we tried to explain to him that the beach is off limits to pets -- at least until the sun set again and we took him back down. He just loved the beach. On both the ride down and back, Jeter was a perfect traveller! Slept almost all the way -- sometimes in the floor on his bed, and sometimes on the back seat with Summer beside him. This trip gave him a good opportunity to bond with Richie as the two were in close quarters for a good part of the trip. On at least three days, Richie didn't venture out to the parks and on two days he didn't go on the beach, so he and Jeter relaxed in the cool hotel room. I have to send you copies of the photos we took -- we have some great ones of Jeter! He also was able to eat at some of the best restaurants as we always brought home some yummy tidbits of whatever we couldn't eat -- and let me say that the portions were huge, so Jeter ate well. Jeter was very happy to get back home and has really settled in since we have returned. I think he now realizes that this is it! He won't be going to live with anyone else and this is his permanent home. You should see the two huge holes in our backyard. They get deeper and deeper. Jeter loves to dig and he loves to sprint back and forth between his two holes. Also, he loves to just lay in that dirt! (Of course, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know about.) We just love our baby Jeter! He is such a goofball and loves to play with his toys -- today I took 18 stuffed toys back to Summer's room. He just keeps bringing them into my room and playing with them -- but he never takes them back. He especially likes toys that make noise, move, or shake. Actually, he reminds me very much of a cat in the way he loves those toys. Have an enjoyable Labor Day and remember that Jeter is only a couple of hours away from you if you ever want to visit. Love ya, Sherry :-) February 28, 2004 We love this dog so much! He sleeps in bed with us every night now. And he lays all over me or Richie, almost like we are his pillows. I'm serious! He puts his head on us and drapes his upper legs over one or both of us. He also lounges on the bed with Richie during the afternoon. This guy has it made in the shade! He also goes to get "a day of beauty" once a month. My groomer opened her own shop right at the entrance to our neighborhood, so she lets me bring Jeter down after I get home from school and then I go get him in 90 minutes. He gets all beautified -- washed, brushed, teeth cleaned, and toenails clipped -- plus a beautiful new bandana tied around his neck (last time it was red hearts for Valentines Day). Believe it or not, he loves to go there! And we think he looks pretty good when we get him back, too. With him only being gone 90 minutes, Richie misses him so. We all think Jeter is the BOMB! |
