The Road Up
I actually climbed to les Baux twice. Once by myself and later again when my friends came. The first time I cycled through St. Remy on the way to visit the ruins of Glanum just outside. Glanum is an excavated roman city and worth a visit. The day I was there it was extremely hot and I was looking forward to biking under cover of the forest marked on the map. According to the map it would be a just few kilometers further along the main road and then a short trip to the right. As I left Glanum I began to climb in earnest and the woods appear on schedule. I was thinking, this is great, I'm gaining altitude and in the shade as well. I'll reach the top, hang a right and be there. Suddenly the road began to descend. I was picking up speed. Losing all the altitude I worked for and no right turn in sight! At the bottom the trees ran out and the turn appeared. I could see the fortress only a short distance away. A short distance straight up. In the sun. Driven by thoughts of cold, frothing, liquid refreshment I made the very steep grade and rolled inside the walls. Click here to see what I found.
