The Cance River Gorge

Heading out south and east from the town of Annonay you enter the Cance River Gorge. The road that time forgot. It is an official route with a number and even three or four houses but in the five or six times I've ridden it, I've never met a car. The road is narrow, built when cars were smaller and slower. It's very quiet on this road. A little gravel noise, your own breathing (mine anyway), and the rush of the wind in your ears are the only sounds you hear. This year we met one cyclist. Partway along is La Roche Periandre, a huge phallus shaped rock. A sure conversation starter if there's anyone with you. Toward the end of the gorge the road crosses a magnificent bridge. The route runs for about 15 miles and comes out into a wide flat valley where the Cance empties into the Rhone. It's then time to roll on down into Tournon for lunch.
