The Papal Gardens

Up at the top of a rise behind the Palace and the Cathedral perch the ancient Papal Gardens. Cool and breezy, even on a hot day the gardens are a relaxing respite from the hurly-burly in the streets below. There are very, very large goldfish in the water just waiting for a snack. Toss in a piece of your baguette or simply stick the end in the water and feed a fish from your hand. But keep your fingers out of the water! The gardens even have their own artificial grotto as well as a nice tea terrace. The view from the mount is really incredible, especially from the top of the grotto. If you are heading East up the Durance toward the Maritime Alps, as I was, you can easily see the peaks ahead. When the drama of the streets overwhelms you, come up here and get a preview of the route ahead.
