F.A.Q

A MUD (Multiple User Dimension, Multiple User Dungeon, or Multiple User Dialogue) is a computer program which users can log into and explore. Each user takes control of a computerized character. You can walk around, chat with other characters, explore dangerous monster-infested areas, solve puzzles, and even create your very own rooms, descriptions and items. You can also get lost or confused if you jump right in, so be sure to read this document before starting.

Many muds are found on WebPages like these. But many people go to the MUD CONNECTOR where there are well over 15000 muds available for mudders alike to try out.

There are a few ways to connect to a MUD'S internet port. The main way is to use TELNET. When you find out the address and port number of the MUD, for instance you knew Archipelago's address was Archipelago.org port 2895
We could Type: Telnet Archipelago.org 2895
The second way which i think is a far better one, is to find a MUD Client (See below) which are a lot better in many ways.

Mud clients are simply another program in which you use instead of telnet to connect yourself to a mud. Telnet is a very frustrating way to connect to a mud because if you are typing out a line and someone says something it really makes a mess out of your line. Clients have very useful things such as macros and the speed walking buttons which save you a lot of typing. The best client I have seen is Zmud.

When you connect you will be asked to enter a name for your character. Choose a name which sounds suitable to the theme of the mud and choose a password which you wont forget.
When connected the best command for you to do is HELP (simply type help). You should have a list of important instructions for you to follow to help you on the way to become a great warrior. If you become further in trouble and you find yourself stuck, just ask an immortal, Type WHO and see the list of people playing and amongst them may be an Immortal (wizard) which are there to help newbies just like yourself. When you get used to all the commands and start to travel around killing small bugs and other monsters, you will be soon exploring many other zones and going on quests with other players around the world.

Well if you get to like them a lot, you will find it very hard to come away from them. I myself have been playing them for around 4 years and now I'm starting to build my own mud with others that I have met though the years.
