Caring
for Young Families - Whanau Awhina
CHILD SAFETY: a guide for parents.
Did you know that in New Zealand, 13,000 children under five years of age are hospitalised each year because of injuries and poisoning? Many of these admissions are avoidable.
FALLS - Birth to 9 months old
As soon as your baby is born, she will wriggle, move and push against things with her feet. You will need to be aware that even these movements can result in a fall.
The next step for your baby will include rolling, and he will then be capable of falling off anything. Do not leave your baby alone on high places such as tables, beds, chairs, or sofas. Always use the harness provided with nursery furniture - changing tables, strollers or high chairs. If left unprotected, your baby will fall.
Your baby may crawl at about six months of age. Erect a barrier over stairs and keep him out of any room where he may be hurt.
