Caring
for Young Families - Whanau Awhina
CHILD SAFETY: a guide for parents.
Did you know that in New Zealand, 13,000 children under five years of age are hospitalised each year because of injuries and poisoning? Many of these admissions are avoidable.
CAR SAFETY - Birth to 9 months old
Car crashes are one of the biggest dangers to your child's life and health. Installing and using an approved infant car restraint will prevent injury or death in most crashes.
Rent or buy an infant seat before you take your baby home from hospital, and use it. As your baby grows, you will need to move to the next size of seat. It is safest to keep your baby in a car seat which allows her to be rear-facing in the car until one year of age. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Check that your baby's car seat is installed correctly. Use it each time your baby travels in a car - make each ride a safe ride!
