Caring
for Young Families - Whanau Awhina
CHILD SAFETY: a guide for parents.
Did you know that in New Zealand, 13,000 children under five years of age are hospitalised each year because of injuries and poisoning? Many of these admissions are avoidable.
BURNS - 18 months to 3 years
Your child can turn on taps and climb to reach the stove. Ensure your hot tap temperature in turned down to 50 degrees C. Use a stoveguard, and keep pot handles turned inwards. Don't leave chairs beside the bench or stove, as your child can use them to climb up.
If your child gets burned, cool the area quickly under cold water for at least 10 minutes. Wrap the burn or scald loosely in clean cloth. Call your doctor for all burns.
