Marauders
Kressarian merchant knows about deuterium mining station
Klingon freighter drops out of warp 600 thousand km from planet
12 bio signs, all Klingon
Korok's ship. Four round tanks on either side, proto-bird winds, jutting nose. Was expected three days from now. Believe they have exclusive arrangement with miners. Get very angry if miners have been dealing with any other ships.
Korok and 5 men beam down. Leathers, furs and bat'leths.
'My old friend' Korok greets miner Tessic with hug and pat on back. Laugh and chuckle.
'My crew's hungry. Let's have food and drink. Then we'll discuss business.'
'I can get deuterium anywhere. I come here because I like you, when you show me hospitality, and respect.'
'I'll give you four days. Have it all ready.'
Calls for transport. Zing sound, red light.
For five seasons the Klingons have been taking all the first yield deuterium the miners can extract.
Usually there are seven Klingons. the miners tried to stand up to the Klingons, three seasons ago. Five miners died, then the Klingons killed three more, to prove their point, including boy's father.
The Klingon ship goes to warp.
Klingon ship not much more than a freighter familiar to Ens. Mayweather.
T'Pol doubts the marauders answer to the High Council.
76 settlers are being prayed upon.
Klingons are aggressive warriors, but their tactics are crude. They're slow to adapt to changing circumstances.
Klingons carry disruptors, but they prefer to use bladed weapons. The two most common being the bat'leth, a curved bilateral sword, and the mek'leth, a two pronged dagger. The bat'leth can decapitate with one stroke. The mek'leth is typically used to slash the throat or disembowel.
Korok fires off disruptor when he and six others beam down, settlement deserted, pumps off.
Klingon phrase dispersing men
This will cost you more than deuterium
They're making fools of us.
View through Klingon binoculars.
They're hiding in the dirt like targ. They'll learn to show us respect. We'll kill another four. Perhaps the boy as well.
Seeing the miners, the Klingons throw down their bladed weapons and draw their disruptors.
You'll live to regret this.
If you're thinking about coming back, I wouldn't advise it. We're not afraid of you anymore.
Your deuterium isn't fit for a garbage scow.
from Voragh, canon master      [email protected]
KOROK:  Tu'chaH!  HI-qem chaH!  Dah!
I imagine this is supposed to be:  "Find them! Bring me them! Now!"
KOROK:  pa'chaH So'!
"There they hide!"
KOROK:  il-Qot lam parHa' Oosh!  They're hiding in the dirt like Targ.
"___ lie dirt like ___!"  (Something is wrong with this caption!)
   KOROK:  Gorat-kA!
???  (From context, this is something like "After them! Get them!")
KOROK:  Net joj!  HIv chaH qagh!  muH HoH toch!
"That [pronoun!] area-between!  Attack them *gakh* (?)!  Execute, kill, palm (of hand)!"
Although /toch/ was in the captions, this was probably a typo by the captionist for {Hoch}, making that last bit:  "Execute [them], kill everyone!"

Precious Cargo
September 12, 2152: Trip Tucker helps a Retellian freighter with repairs, where he frees the female passenger in stasis because she is about to suffocate. The woman, First Monarch Kaitaama, is the Kriosian monarch and was held prisoner on the ship. She is *not* an empathic metamorph like Kamala in the TNG episode.  The Kriosian battlecruiser is recognizable design of the overused Akritirian/Ba'neth/Lokirrim ship, completely out of place and time.
Trip's going to try to come back in 246 days when the princess becomes First Monarch.

Judgment
[tribunal on Narenda III ]Hall tall hexagonal courtroom with red lights, lower wall crossed metal panels. Red trefoil high on wall above Magistrate, various weapons arrayed on wall displays. Jiggly stand by witness door.
Courtroom upper balcony crowd stand and hold spears, chant ‘jagh’ and pound spears in unison as prisoner brought in. prisoner docket has lighted triangle on floor, metal railings, in center of room facing Magistrate.
Magistrate wears metal claw glove on right hand and arm, pounds ball gavel for silence. Magistrate wears cowl of cloth, with silver sigils along top edge. Ball gavel sparks when strikes silvery desk plate
Crowd sits obediently
Magistrate cites charge – How do you respond?
Prisoner stands center on platform with guard
Tomorrow tribunal will convene and prisoner will be given chance to prove innocence, if not, only one punishment
City – several high peaks covered with buildings, deep gorge crossed by bridges between them. Distant rough peaks. Bird of prey aircraft take off. Flame burning from top of major building.
Prison – extremely large cell, filtered light from  mesh screens above. Mesh screens for walls along corridor. Wooden door with window. Bench, table. Long, low stone bench-bed
Guard escorts doctor to prisoner, hides behind mesh screen when prisoner possibly contagious
Trial before execution
Enemies of the state aren’t allowed visitors
Starfleet and Vulcan High Command working to free Archer diplomatically
Targ a good source of protein
Kolos, advocate. Became an advocate many years ago. Different times. The courts were more willing to listen. Won over 200 cases before tribunal ceased to be a forum for the truth and became a tool for the warrior class
Now that you’ve been charged, the evidence will be presented
Advocate will conduct the defense. Will speak for prisoner
There is no jury
Orak, prosecutor. Well-known. Wears sash over left shoulder
I perform my duty
This tribunal is convened. Strength to the Empire!
Prosecutor first, calls witness
Captain Duras, son of Toral. No longer Captain of the Bortas, now second weapons officer at Ty Go Kor defense perimeter. Reduced in rank due to incident with Archer and Enterprise
Slaps hand on heart in general direction of Magistrate
Prisoner be silent or will be removed
Targ bone on metal plate. A little underdone.
A group of 54 rebels fled Klingon protectorate at Ra Doras. [the Arin'sen colony. ] Duras and the Bortas ordered to catch traitors wanted for treason. Caught up with them in system just outside Klingon empire. rebels have been fleeing for about 10 weeks. 27 left.
Several years ago their colony was annexed to Klingon Empire. Klingons said they would provide for colony in exchange for allegiance. Klingons stripped colony for resources, left and never returned. Colony failed.
Fugitives wanted for inciting rebellion
We can defeat them easily.
By authority of Chancellor of Klingon High Council
Fire one shot and you’ll be joining your ancestors in the afterlife
Enterprise inferior to Bortas, a D-5 battlecrusier. Max peed warp 6. pretty standard multi-spectral sensors. Female second officer, behind and to the right, male behind and to the left.
Bortas drops out of warp with their weapons charged.
Green blobs of fire, red bolts of fire
Typical Klingon octagonal display instrument panels, triangular push lights.
Metal support struts chris-cross bridge of Bortas. Nice even lines of static when monitor goes out.
Damage takes three hours to repair
You’re fortunate your first officer didn’t kill you for such a failure, you’re dismissed.
Mission to bring enemies of the empire to justice. Thwarted by Archer and Enterprise.
Archer conspired to disgrace a proud warrior and ferment rebellion
Klingons have been lenient – haven’t accused his crew or his government. Have not dispatched fleet of warships to his homeworld
Most severe punishment our laws decree –
To advocate – do you have a response?
Magistrate will consider evidence and deliver verdict
At nod from Magistrate disruptive Archer stunned with two painsticks by guards from behind– collapses on rails of prisoner stand. Doesn’t loose consciousness.
This tribunal is in recess!
Advocate talks with magistrate, to show mercy to prisoner
Advocate and Magistrate have made an offer to Archer. Want location of rebels
The time for testimony is over.
Within archaic rights to present further testimony if no verdict has been reached.
Judicial charter of Kolos – advocate can challenge the charges at any point during the tribunal
Charter has not been cast aside
From the time of Kahless, courts have stood as a forum where justice is dispensed with honor
You see the contempt these humans have for us! Refuses to see he has done anything wrong in aiding fleeing starving colonists.
Deliberate attack on Imperial vessel an act of war
The captain of a battle cruiser speaks for the Empire
Archer’s name is well-known to High Council. The facts are on record. Archer once stood before the Chancellor himself. The records of the Imperial fleet also mention Archer’s rescue of the Somrah.
Usually a verdict doesn’t take any time at all
Blood wine in small flask – helps make the wait more pleasant
Not all Klingons are soldiers
Kolos’s father was a teacher, his mother a biologist at university. They encouraged him to take up the law.
Now young people want to take up weapons, they are told honor in victory, any victory. Heroes lauded. Honor was earned through integrity and acts of true courage, not senseless bloodshed.
Dilithium mines on Rura Penthe. Life expectancy 6 months to a year. Haul dilithium in woven baskets. Mine with pick axes. Little rolling cart on tracks. Guards with pain sticks. Any trouble and you’ll spend the night on the surface. Most prisoners have very little to live for.
Our ships run on dilithium, not talk
I complement the Magistrate on his just ruling
It has been many years since any prisoner stood in this chamber and received justice.
Watch your words. You insult the honor of this tribunal. You are in contempt of this tribunal.
Vulcan High Command lobbies for Archer. Enterprise ordered to leave planet of tribunal, deep in Klingon territory.
T’Pol knows Klingon bureaucrats, from her days in the Vulcan Ministry of Security, who can be ‘persuaded’. One put her in touch with corrections officer who was willing to look the other way for the right price. Dilithium barge captain bribed to bring Reed in and take Archer and Reed back to Enterprise.
Kolos can’t go with Archer. He has been an advocate for 50 years, spent the last 20 standing in the tribunal, playing his part, holding his tongue, while honorable men were being sent to places like this.
I may not have the courage but I know I’ll never be able to restore honor to my people living as a fugitive.
Archer and Reed just walk out of Rura Penthe, Kolos stays

The Breach
Phlox has a brown tribble. Extremely difficult to obtain. Outlawed on most worlds. All it is capable of doing really is eating and breeding. Breed quite prodigiously. He feeds it to a reptile in a green leaf filled cage. Tribble chomped immediately. The only thing that keeps tribbles in check is abundance of reptiles on its homeworld.

Bounty
March 21, 2153
Arguing is a sport on Tellar
Tellarite Captain Skalaar contacts Captain Goroth over secure channel
Skalaar bringing Archer to Qo'noS as they agreed. Two days to rendezvous site. Bounty on Archer.
Skalaar didn't know what Archer's crime was.
Archer - If the Klingons wanted a fugitive, they were probably innocent.
If Skalaar doesn't deliver Archer, Goroth will simply offer a reward for both Archer and Skalaar.
Skalaar has learned never to cross a Klingon. He doesn't work for those savages, he works for himself.
Goroth paying Skalaar 9000 darseks for Archer, a fortune. The same, dead or alive.
Skalaar given two months to find Archer.
Kago-Darr another bounty hunter sent by Goroth, indeterminate species.
Tellarite freighter captain Skalaar hauling firesalt cut across corner of Klingon space, hoping to go unnoticed. No such possibility. Klingons took ship and cargo, let brothers go. Lucky to escape with their lives.
L-class planet less than 6 ly from Klingon space.
Archer only prisoner to escape Rura Penthe.
Klingons cannibalized Tellarite freighter.
Skalaar has been aboard Goroth's ship twice.
Tiny Tellarite shuttle docks with un-Klingon looking ship -wingless. Two surly young Klingon males take Archer after genetic scan.
The empire never forgives its enemies.
?Klingon word
6000 darseks, clinky long bars in a lightweight box.
Archer in holding cell, red grill lights on walls. Bench. Tan fur cover.
Archer frees himself from cell with lockpick Skalaar gave him. Sets off throbbing alarm. One warrior comes running along maze of corridors. Archer tackles him, bit of a struggle to subdue Klingon.
Archer runs through maze of red light corridors.
Key pad door.
Firefight in hallway.
No planet within 50 ly of current location
Archer takes Klingon escape pod, single person, pod shaped. Ejects from underside of ship. Several escape pods
Goroth wants Archer alive. Weapons need to be charged. Klingon tractor beam.
Klingon ship weapon ports heavily shielded. Disabled by Enterprise. Port nacelle damaged.
Enterprise bigger than Klingon ship.
Likely Klingons will double their bounty.

The Expanse
Qo'noS stormy sky, dark cloud layer, with patch of white cloud and blue sky. Snow caped mountains beyond city. Deed chasm through middle of main city. Domed assembly building with ring of windows lit blue at base of dome. Another building with ring of blue windows at top of cylinder.
Klingons stand at long wooden table.
Our magistrate should never have shown Archer mercy. He should have been executed for his crime.
Duras' mission was to locate rebels and return them to the Empire. Simple mission. Thwarted by Archer. Archer made a fool of him.
Council gives Duras a chance to regain his command and his honor.
I will not fail.
Slaps chest
April 24, 2153. Klingon bird of prey fires on Enterprise within Sol system.
Fire some kind of green blobs, do lots of pinpoint damage.
Send message - They want Archer. They won't destroy Enterprise if Archer surrenders.
Archer is an enemy of the Empire. He must be brought to justice if honor is to be regained.
Both their nacelles are crippled. Their cannons are down. Prepare a boarding party.
Three Earth vessels come to help Enterprise.
Bird of prey's shields are failing.
Are they off line? No. Then keep firing!
Bird of prey has crew of 5 - 6. All male crew.
Disruptor banks 3 and 4.
Withdraw! Bird of Prey goes to warp.
Bird of prey waiting for Enterprise to leave drydock over Earth after stay of days.
Bird of prey fires on Enterprise some time out from Earth, two days from Vulcan.
Enterprise fires anti-matter warheads at bird of Prey. Duras does not recognize the hake-up effect produced by new Earth weapon. But officer immediate identifies it.
Increase shielding!
Bird of prey drops to impulse. Three hours (approx) to repair. Warp 3 top speed.
Seven weeks later three birds of prey attack Enterprise six hours inside the perimeter cloud of Expanse. Targeting sensors won't lock on in odd space.
So get closer!
Archer was told Klingons wouldn't go into the Expanse. They are not technically inside the Expanse yet.
Duras hails Enterprise. Surrender or be destroyed. You're outgunned, Archer. Come about and prepare to be boarded. If you don't obey my orders -
Archer cuts him off.
Other Klingon ships turn back at edge of Expanse proper. Duras tosses cowardly helmsman out of chair and follows Enterprise in.
Anti-matter torpedoes can't penetrate strengthened Klingon shields.
Duras pilots bird of prey as Enterprise goes up and over to come down behind. Enterprise destroys bird of prey.

The Expanse novelization by J. M. Dillard
Duras, son of Toral, shame had gnawed at him for months, at times coming close to yield to temptation to end his life at his own hands
Possibility of revenge so long as he lived
Shame that suicide without honor would bring his family
Live for the moment of revenge
Many unsuccessful petitions council had agreed to see him
Qo'NoS long journey from Ty'Gokor defense perimeter, a place for the incompetent, the humiliated, the disgraced. The latrine of the Empire Klingon protectorate of Raatooras
His kin was shamed and no longer spoke his name
Groan like a wounded targ
Twenty years ago a Klingon ship emerged from the Expanse, crewmen alive, anatomically inverted.
Duras' spies tell him Enterprise in at Earth for repairs, and when she leaves. fail to mention the weapons upgrades
Duras did not fear death, he feared failure
Pulse thrummed in his ears, a war cry
The days of boredom had worn on them all
Antimatter, in a voice tinged with wonder
Were he superstitious he would think Archer a demon, sent by Duras' ancestors as punishment for some crime the Klingon had inadvertently committed
Tales of the misfortunes that had befallen soldiers whose lust for the kill burned too hotly, leading to carelessness
rest the prescribed number of hours
possessed his mind and soul like an ancestral ghost
strict orders to bring himself and his prisoner back to the Klingon homeworld alive
hatred burning in him like an unquenchable flame
the High Council forbades all Klingon ships from entering the area of the Expanse because of its infamous dangers
would his House continue to feel shame on his behalf?
