The Kinetic Sculpture Race has been a Memorial Day event for 30 years. The Sculptures
travel on roads, in the water and over sand dunes from Arcata to Ferndale. It takes 3 days. All the vehicles are totally human powered. They are mechanical marvels like a multi-person bicycle. Some have support people that ride along with the machines. These people help push the crafts up steep sand dunes or pull them out of the water... The gourd shown below was blown off course by the strong winds Sunday and had to be rescued by the Coast Guard... The gourd sculpture acts like a sail and they accidentally overshot the exit boat ramp...

The picture of Bush as a dangerous madman (below) was unspired by a newspaper article saying that we are spending $6 billion dollars to do research into better nuclear weapons...
I find that this defense money is making its way to Humboldt State University.
I have been offered two internships for computer science students... One from Los Alamos Lab and another from Lawrence Berkeley... No other offers... The CALCULUS teachers are happy... That branch of math is required for Atom Bomb design... Can you imagine anyone that really thinks that we need new and improved Atom Bombs? Insane! They propose smaller bombs that will be more likely to be used in a War. Our current Nukes are so big that NOONE would ever use them because they would trigger WWIII and the end of all life on the planet. Therefore, they feel that we need to design "mini-nukes" that can be used to blow up tunnels and caves in Afghanistan... I'm not making this up!

All the words from a newspaper article I wrote for the HSU Lumberjack Newspaper... The party mentioned has already happened but the Laboratory is still there... Well worth the visit... They do not have any regular hours for visitors but they might just let you look around anyway... they are real friendly people...
Kinetic Laboratory Open House and Party
The Laboratory that builds these works of art will be open to the public on Saturday, April 26th from 4pm to 9pm. This is a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and see the underlying mechanical engineering that makes it all work. Talk to the designers and dance the night away. The lab is located at 8th and N street in a large warehouse in the industrial section of Arcata. Many of the sculptures are attached to the ceiling of the warehouse because there is not enough room to store them all on the floor. There will be live music, a raffle and a 9-hole kinetic miniature golf course.
The race itself is May 25th to May 27th and runs from Arcata to Ferndale. The sculptures race on roads, in sand and in the water. Therefore, the sculptures must be able to float and navigate the Eureka bay. Special tires must be used to travel on the sand dunes in Samoa. The tires and paddlewheels must be stored on the machine itself throughout the entire race. The official rules require all vehicles carry a teddy bear for emotional support.
June Moxon works at the Laboratory and has ridden a sculpture of a shoe across the United States. It took over two years to bicycle from Ferndale to Florida. She and her friend Ken Biedleman rode the sculpture and slept in a giant water barrel that was attached to the back of the shoe. They would ride until they ran out of money and then stop and build things for people. Once they had earned enough money to proceed, they continued their journey. Moxon's adventures are described in a book called "The Sky's the Limit" by Catherine Thimmesh. This book has brief biographies of famous women that accomplished great things. In the book there are stories of Jane Goodall and her research of the great apes of Africa. This is a children's book designed to inspire youngsters to believe in themselves and find the courage to go out and make a difference in the world. June finds herself the company of the great heroines of our time.
The Kinetic Sculpture race was started by artist Hobart Brown. He has an art gallery showcasing his metal sculptures on Main street Ferndale. The gallery features paintings by friends of his and a museum of the Race. The first race was in 1969 and has become a part of Humboldt County's Culture. People from around the globe come here to see the race and it brings in an estimated two million dollars to the local economy, said Bill Croft of the Humboldt Kinetic Association. At least six other cities have decided to start their own race. Perth (Australia), Baltimore, Ventura, Corvalis and even Poland have their own races.

a website built by the Humboldt Kinetic Association. It has a map of the course, and the history of the race. Hobart has left the running of the race to the organization but still keeps his hand in. Visit them if you want to enter your own vehicle or start your own race. According to Bill Croft at the organization, corporate funding of this years race is less that normal. Due to the economy and the war, sources of money have dried up. He asks that every person in Humboldt county donate one dollar to the race.
Last year, students from UC Santa Barbara ran a sculpture that they had built for their own "moon rover" competition. It looked like a hot dog and bun. Even though it was a beautiful machine, it did not have the ability to go up the "slippery slimy slope". According to Robert Thoman at the Kinetic Laboratory, beauty is not enough to win in this race. The mechanical engineering requirements are rather tough. These machines have to go up an extremely steep hill near the end of the race.
The bands playing at the open house are: Spudgun, The Amazing Art Band and Compass Rose. Food, beer, wine and soft drinks will be served.

tightly sealed.he places it on the fire...
they all move back...it will take time
for the gas to expand enough to burst
the can... a slender woman with strawberry
blond hair raises a conch shell to her
lips and draws a deep breath. she blows
a long note signaling the beginning of
a new era of mankind. everything is

then a tiny hole appears in the gas can
and a cone of fire reaches for the sky...

imagine that you are floating in a tub of warm water...every muscle in your body is completely relaxed...your mind drifts and contentment blooms like a time lapse film of a rose...you leave your body and rise up to the ceiling...you look back and see your body...it is resting with a cup of tea in it's hand...ahh...mint... as you watch your body,your mind seeps thru the ceiling and you see the world. there is a forest...it is for...rest... on the shore of a lake a spiral of deadheads dance around a fire. the flickering light seems to be perfectly synchronized to the rhythm of the drums... alas...the reversal of entropy is mearly an illusion. one of the deadheads reaches into the shadows and lifts a five gallon can of gasoline.it is tightly sealed.he places it on the fire... they all move back...it will take time for the gas to expand enough to burst the can... a slender woman with strawberry blond hair raises a conch shell to her lips and draws a deep breath. she blows a long note signaling the beginning of a new era of mankind. everything is dripping with meaning.significance saturates every leaf of every tree ... then a tiny hole appears in the gas can and a cone of fire reaches for the sky... you contemplate metalurgy,welding and strength of materials... then the gas can resigns itself to fate and a ball of fire searches for oxygen and of course finds it. the spiral of deadheads emit a massive yeah! and you drift on...your body tranmogrifies itself into a bear and you go fishing in a creek...you see your paws slap a salmon onto the bank and you eat the fish... (yes, I've done that)
