Part Four

Nick slowly opened his eyes. He sat up and rubbed his eyes. He
glanced at the clock. It was 9:45. He slowly got out of bed and made
his way into the restroom. He used it and then made his way over to
the sink. He splashed some water on his face and removed a towel to
dry it with.

He walked over to the computer and sat down. He checked his email
and waited. 9:48. He looked over at his window then deleted all the
emails. Again he checked the time. 9:50. He sighed and got up. He
walked over to the window. It was the only one that wasn't covered
with drapes. It was the only one he could see out of. He could only
see the sky though it. He turned and walked back over to the
computer. He took in a deep breath. 9:59.

Greg sat in the break room, with his MP3 player playing loudly in
his ears. To make it worse he sang along with it, very loudly.

"Greg, it's 10:00 don't you have a date with your lame computer
friend" Catherine said.

"Oh shit, thanks Cath" he said and run out of the room.

"I'm going to kill Gil for giving him to me" she said in a huff.

"Well you said you where short handed" Sara said smiling.

"Yeah, I thought he'd hire someone for me. Not give me Greg" Cath
said shaking her head. "I'm going to kill him"

Nick looked at the clock 10:04.

Formerlabrat was entered the room.

Nick smiled.

Shutting88: Hello there he typed and turned around. He took in a
deep breath smelling something.

Shuttin88 : oh lord someone is cooking something nasty

Formerlabrat : Oh I hated that the most about living in an apartment

Shutin88 : It almost smells like something is burning.

Nick stood up and walked to his door. He opened it. He swallowed
hard as smoke poured in. He backed up into the wall.

Formerlabrat : must be a bad cook.

Greg sat back and hmm along with to the song.

"Ok, Nick what's up," Greg said he pulled his pen out of his pocket
and placed it on his mouth.

Formerlabrat : Nick are you there. What's going on.

Nick lowered himself to the ground. He could hear the smoke
detectors going off. He pulled his legs close to him and slowly
rocked back and forth.

"Something's not right" Greg said.

Formerlabrat : Nick hello Greg stood up.

"Hey Cath I'm going to get lunch out, I'll be back in a bit"

"Yeah sure whatever" she said not even looking up.

Greg walked into the locker room and opened his. He found the paper
with Nick's address on it and put it in his pocket. He almost ran
out to his car.

"Maybe he won't come back" Cath said.

"He's not that bad" Sara said

"Yeah sure you don't have to work with him all night"

"I use to" Sara said.

"Yeah he'll he's still a wanna be"

Sara looked at her very surprised she said that. She picked up her
book and walked out.

"Well he is, and I'm stuck with him." she said.

Greg did his best not to speed. Nick had never once just stopped
chatting while on the computer. Something had to be wrong. Greg
turned and pulled his car to a stop. He got out and ran up to the
building. He opened the door and smoke came pouring out.

"I need and fire and rescue at the Apple wood apartments on Green
hills road" Greg called in.

Greg walked inside. He couldn't see any fire but there was smoke
filling the whole building. He pulled out the paper and check to see
what number Nicks apartment was in. 19 B. Greg covered his mouth
with his t-shirt as he walked up the steps.

"Nick" he called out. He came to 19 B. He walked in. He could barely
see though the thick smoke.

"Nick" he yelled this time.

Nick lifted his head.

"Who's there" Nick called out. He was now sitting on his bed.

"Nick it's me Greg, where are you" he called out making his way to
the back of the apartment. He walked in seeing Nick siting on his
head.

"You gotta get out of here" Greg said walking over to him. He
stopped a few feet away not sure what he would do if he got to close.

"I can't, I can't go out there" Nick whispered. He wrapped his arms
around his legs. "Wait how did you know to come here."

"You never just leave while we are chatting" Greg said. "I guessed
something was wrong. You have to come out; you'll die if you stay in
here."

"No, no, I can't go out there." he said.

The smoke was getting heaver and Greg could hear the fire trucks
heading towards them.

"Look, the firefighters are on there way. So you can let me help you
out or they will come in here and drag you out" Greg said holding
out his hand.

Nick looked down. He was shaking all over.

"I'm going to get sick" he said.

"Nick, we need to get out of here." Greg said hoping the wall
wouldn't be filled with fire. "Please Nick, I'm not leaving with out
you"

Nick looked up.

"You don't even know me" he said.

"Yeah I do, we've chatted for over a year. I just didn't know what
you looked like. So please, let's go."

Nick slowly put his hand in Greg's. He stood up and took a few steps
forward. Greg led him out of the bed room. They both where coughing
now. Greg went thought the door but Nick stopped.

"Nick, it's ok, I won't let go of your hand" Greg said.

Nick pulled back just a bit. "I'm sorry" he tried to say but nothing
came out. Greg held his hand tighter. Nick took a step out and Greg
pulled his down the hall. They somehow made it down the steps. Greg
pushed the door open right as the fire trucks pulled up in front of
the building. Greg lead Nick down the steps and to his car. He
opened the door and sat Nick down. He tried to let go.

"No" Nick almost screamed. "You said you won't let go"

"Ok, I'm sorry, your right" Greg said sitting next to the car. Nick
pulled his legs up to his chest; he placed his free hand in his ear
and started to rock back and forth. He was pale as a ghost and his
hand felt clammy to Greg touch.

"It's going to be ok" Greg said

Nick seemed to not even hear him.

A paramedic ran over to them.

"Are you guys ok" She asked.

"We took in a lot of smoke" Greg said. His chest felt like it was on
fire.

"Sir" she said looking at Nick. "I think he's in shock"

"He's a oh shit, a shutin. He's been in this apartment since 88 or
something" Greg said.

She nodded. "Well we should take you guys in and get you checked
out."

"He's not going to let go" Greg said.

"Will he listen to you?"

"I think so" Greg said.

"Nick we need to get in the ambulance so they can check us out. I
don't know about you but my chest hurts pretty badly" Greg said.

Nick didn't answer but stood up. The paramedic led them to the rig.
Greg got in and Nick followed.

"Sir you need to let go so we can check you both out" a older man
said.

"I don't think he can, he's pretty shaken up" Greg said.

"Fine, I'll try and work around his hand." he said putting a oxygen
mask on both of the men.

"Just try and breathe normally" he said. Greg watched as they took
their vitals.

Greg looked at Nick. He had one hand over his ears and was curled
up. He had his eyes closed and was rocking back and forth. Greg's
hand was starting to hurt from Nick's tight grip. The rig pulled to
a stop.

"So how do you plan on getting inside" the medic asked removing the
oxygen masks.

The doors opened. Greg was still coughing pretty badly.

"Nick we need to get out and go inside" he said trying to not cough.

Greg got down and pulled on Nick's arm. Nick slowly got down.

"Good luck, he won't let go fucking fagots" the medic said.

Greg turned a looked at him as he walked off.

"hello, I'm Doctor Green" he man said. "So you won't let go"

"hmm, he's a shut-in. His building had a fire in it" Greg said.

"That's fine, we can put the bed's clothes together" he said. Greg
was coughing worse. Nick was starting to as well.

Dr Green led them to a room. He pushed the two beds together.

"I'm going to start you on oxygen and run some tests" he said
placing a mask on them. Greg got on one bed. He was surprised when
Nick got up on his bed as well.

"Nick your killing my hand. You can hold it but could you loosen
your grip just a bit" Greg said between coughs. Nick loosened his
grip.

"Thank you" Greg said pulling out his phone.

"Where the hell are you?" Cath asked hatefully

"I'm at the hospital. I went to check on Nick and his place was on
fire. I got him out. But we both took in a lot of smoke. They are
giving us oxygen and breathing treatments" Greg said.

"Wait who's Nick." Catherine asked.

"He's a friend. I was getting some chicken, and he called saying he
needed help" Greg said.

"Greg you're a bad liar even over the phone" she said. "you with the
chat room guy"

Yeah, I am but I really am at the hospital." Greg said then telling
her the truth this time.

"I'll be there in a few" she said.

"Gil I'm going to kill you, Greg's in the hospital with some shut-
in. And he won't let go of Greg's hand."

"Wow, Greg's befriended an agoraphobia that is very interesting" he
said.

"A what" Catherine yelled out.

"Agoraphobia produces intense anxiety when you are in a place where
escape is difficult or embarrassing. Those people who have had panic
attacks often worry about being in a place where help may not be
available, if they have another attack. This fear causes the person
to withdraw into safer surroundings, and many agoraphobics will only
frequent a few secure locations, such as their home, a specific
route to work, or sometimes the homes of friends or relatives. They
typically avoid bridges, tunnels, elevators, highways without
shoulders, limited access roads with infrequent exits, or being in
crowded places. In the extreme, they will not leave their home." Gil
said.

" Well you seem to know a lot about it, you go down there then" she
said.

Gil nodded. "Why are they in at the hospital" he asked.

"Caught in a fire or something" she said sitting down.

"Well did you check to see if Greg was ok" he asked putting on his
jacket.

"I'm sure I did" she said.

Gil walked out of the room and headed out to his car.

"Hi I hope you can help me, I'm looking for Greg Sanders" Gil said
once he walked into the er.

"Room 3, go on back"

Gil found his way. He stood in the door way.

"Just breathe like you would normally." Dr Green said.

Greg nodded holding the tube in his hand. He took slow deeps
breaths.

Gil looked him up and down. He couldn't see any injurers. He glanced
at Greg's hand seeing it was still firmly in Nick's hand.

Greg looked up at Gil.

"Are they hurt" Gil asked the doctor.

"No, Greg is just having some trouble clearing his lungs. His friend
is doing much better; we only had to give him one treatment. This is
Greg's 2nd." Dr Green said.

"Ok, Greg I will come and check on you" he said once the treatment
is done. "If you have any more pain just push the call button" he
said walking out of the room.

"So this is your computer friend" Gil asked.

Greg nodded still coughing just a bit.

"He won't talk, he just sits there holding his ear and rocks holding
my hand" Greg said. "I didn't think I was going to get him out of
the house"

"Well he's lucky you did." Gil said.

"What is he going to do if he can't go home" Greg asked.

"You may not get the use of your hand for a while" Gil said.

Greg looked at him then at Nick.

"I'll call Jim and see what kind of damage was done at the fire" Gil
said.

Greg nodded as Gil left the room. He looked over at Nick once again.
His hand ached but oddly he didn't mind anymore and didn't want to
let him go. Nick slowly pulled his hand away from his ear and looked
up.

"Hey" Greg said.

"I want to go home" Nick whispered holding Greg's hand tighter.

"My boss is checking on it right now" Greg said.

Nick looked around. His whole body was shacking.

Gil waked into the room.

"Gil this is my friend Nick" he said.

Nick glanced at Gil. "Hello" he said.

"Nice to meet you Nick, I've got some bad news. Your apartment
building is now a crime scene. The fire was a cover up for a murder.
You won't be able to go home for a while. Plus there was a lot of
smoke damage.

Nick looked down. "They are going to lock me away" he said.

"No I won't let that happen, you could stay at my place" Greg said.
Gil gave Greg a look.

Nick placed his hand on his ear and once again started rocking.

Nick looked over at Greg.

"You'd let me stay at your place."

"Well yeah, I made you leave yours" he said.

"You'd be dead if you didn't leave" Gil said.

Nick looked down again.

"I can't go home" he asked.

"No, I'm sorry not for a least a week or so. We have to processes
the scene and then however long it will take for the owner to clean
up the smoke damage" Gil said.

Nick closed his eyes and held Greg's hand even tighter if that was
possible. Greg clinched his teeth.

"I have a guest room, you can stay in there" Greg said.

Nick nodded as loosened his hold on Greg's hand.

"Guess you just have to watch the race on a 36 inch"

Nick looked up and smiled. Gil nodded and sat down.

Greg placed his hand on his chest. He wished the pain would go away.
