IDEAS FOR POLITICAL DEMONSTRATIONS

POSSIBLE JULY 4TH THEMES?
Americans will be more receptive to positive messages for the 4th of July. If we give them positive solutions they are more likely to take the ideas home in their heads/hearts. Instead of just pointing out the problems...how can people help? i.e.- "You can make a difference", "Bring them home", "Visualize Peace", etc.

Giant puppets of positive iconic images like the Statue of Liberty or Lady Justice could get people's attention. We could stand around them holding up various signs addressing specific issues.

Maybe giant puppets of children....addressing needs for the next generation? "Taxes are better spent on education than weapons", "War is not healthy for children and other living things", "Real National Security means health care", "Don't send my daddy to war", etc?

MICHAEL O'NEILL says: "If the venue wont pan out how about the Fort Desoto shelters?"

JIM MARVIN suggested: "...our theme could focus on people in American history who really brought us our freedom. Such figures would include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Cady Stanton, Rosa Parks, Mother Jones, Clarence Darrow, Abbie Hoffman, Leonard Peltier and AIM, the abolitionists, those who fought for free speech, those who fought against war, and many others you will have to help me remember." Click here for full message

HOW TO MAKE GIANT PUPPETS

These are great for parades as well as non-moving displays. They attract attention from a distance and are very likely to be covered by the media.

I can use the following materials for such projects, if anyone would like to donate them:

Large rolls of lightweight fabric

Long aluminum poles (like those used for pool cleaning)

Vinyl window curtains

Suspenders, bungie cords

Copper tubing

Hula hoops

Wire clothes hangers

Umbrellas

Tennis balls

2"x2" pine wood planks

TIPS ON MAKING SIGNS

Make signs big enough to be read from half a block away.
Most passersby will be at a distance and/or driving quickly.

Make each letter about 6x 4
(about the size of a can of soda pop.)

Dont write more than 3 or 4 lines of text.
Passersby and drivers wont have time to read more than that.

Does the average passerby understand the words?
Unfortunately, most citizens don't know the difference between "Palestine" and "Israel". Be aware that words like "occupation" may be confusing to most people, although they could incite some curiosity and encourage them to find out what they mean.

Mounting your posterboard to corrugated cardboard will make it much easier to hold.
Corrugated cardboard boxes can be obtained for free in the form of boxes from the backroom of any store. Find them by the dumpster (or ask the store employees, if you're more dainty.) A strongly constructed sign can be held above your head with one hand, thus getting more attention.
You can also use foamcore (the stiff white styro boards), but free cardboard is cheaper. You just need to cover the cardboard with posterboard or paper. Don't use uncovered cardboard...it looks tacky.
The Save-a-Lot stores have really huge flat cardboard pieces between layers of their larger products. You have to be there when they are not buried under the products to grab them.

If you're using photographs, check to make sure that they are big/clear enough to tell what they are from a dozen yards away or more.
Although photos make a dramatic statement when viewed close up, most photos will not work from a distance unless they are super huge (which makes them expensive to print). As an alternative, line art or cartoons are easier to discern from a distance.

Tempera paint is really inexpensive and much faster to work with than markers.
Tempera will wash off when exposed to water though, so you can use Acrylic paint if you want something more waterproof. Ironically, the smaller containers of acrylic paint are generally less expensive than the big ones. Wash acrylic paint off brushes promptly when done.

The correct size of brush makes a big difference in painting your sign.
Too big will be messy and not flow smoothly. Too small will take longer.
