Greg's Handcrafted Aqua-blue Telecaster circa 1997

PHASE ONE

I built this guitar myself from parts: a blank Telecaster body, an 80s Japanese Telecaster Neck, stock Telecaster bridge and hardware from Allparts, 1 Fender Lace Sensor pickup, 1 Stratocaster pickup and Grover Tuners. I stained the body a light blue color and then applied several coats of poly-euro thane. I had no idea that an oil-based top coat would yellow the finish so much, so I ended up with an aqua color that I quite like.

Originally the neck didn't fit into the body cavity properly, so I had to raise the bridge saddles really high to prevent buzzing. Eventually the neck cavity had to be re-routed for a better fit.

Originally the guitar had a silver lace sensor pickup in the neck position and a standard Stratocaster pickup in the bridge, as you can see above.

PHASE TWO

Since I'm not the greatest guitar-tech, the instrument had some issues when I initially built it. The intonation was a little off and I couldn't get rid of the fret buzz. A repairman carved a new nut for me and re-set the neck. I have since moved the lace sensor to the bridge position and replaced the neck pickup with a blue Telecaster lace sensor that emulates a humbucker. It really does a great job, and in the neck position this guitar has a great fat sound. I also changed the pickguard to this crushed pearl guard above. Since those modifications, it has become one of my favorite guitars. It plays like a dream and has a sound similar to a Custom Tele.
