The 1990s

My favorite artist of the 90's is Matthew Sweet. He's one of the coolest and most rockin' pop songwriters ever. His Girlfriend album was a real revelation to me as a music listener and a song writer.

Velvet Crush features part-time Matthew Sweet drummer Ric Menck, bassist/keyboardist Paul Chastain and guitarist Jeffery Borchardt. They recorded one of my favorite albums, "Teenage Symphonies To God," released in 1994. They supposedly broke up in 1997 but their long awaited third album "Heavy Changes" was released in Japan that year.  Ric and Paul still keep Velvet Crush alive and have released a couple of albums recently. They also tour and record regularly with Matthew Sweet.

Jellyfish appeared on the college radio scene in the early nineties with a batch of 60s revivalist pop bands like Teenage Fanclub and the Posies. Like those bands they wore the influences blatantly on their outrageously retro shirt sleeves. What set this band apart from its peers was the immaculate production of their albums and their complete mastery of pop songwriting. Their second album, 'Spilt Milk' is a true masterpiece, showcasing the talents of band leaders Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning.

Unfortunately the band broke up after only two brilliant albums. Keyboardist Roger Manning formed Imperial Drag with Eric Dover, guitarist for the Split Milk tour. This group only lasted for one record, but it's a great one.
