About the Job

Many things in life help you succeed. Make joining the Naval Reserve one of them. Proudly supporting both our nation and our part-time reservists, the Naval Reserve offers many benefits that will help you advance your career and enhance your overall life. Usually, all it takes is just one weekend a month and two weeks annual training a year. To join, candidates must be willing to complete an eight-year commitment to military reserve service. Candidates need not have prior military service to apply. Reservists must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 21 and 36; however, under certain conditions, an age waiver may be available up to age 39. Candidates must pass a physical entrance exam.

Joining the US Naval Reserve means a majority of your training will be close to your home and family. However, you'll still have opportunities for world travel. You'll also enjoy many of the same benefits that make the Navy so attractive. Like help with home loans, money for retirement, job security and advanced training in your field.

Machinist Mate (MM)
Machinist Mates operate and maintain steam turbines and reduction gears used for ship propulsion and auxiliary machinery such as turbo generators, pumps and oil purifiers. They also maintain auxiliary machinery outside of main machinery spaces, such as electro hydraulic steering engines and elevators, refrigeration plants, air conditioning systems and desalinization plants. They may also operate and maintain compressed gas producing plants.

Boatswain's Mate (BM)
As a Boatswain's Mate in the Naval Reserve, you will train, direct, and supervise personnel in ship's maintenance duties in all activities relating to marlinespike, deck, boat seamanship, painting, upkeep of ship's external structure, rigging, deck equipment, and boats. You will also take charge of working parties, perform seamanship tasks, act as petty officer-in-charge of picket boats, self-propelled barges, tugs, and other yard and district craft as well as maintain discipline as master-at-arms and police petty officers. Candidates will also serve in, or take charge of, gun crews or damage control parties, and operate and maintain equipment used in loading and unloading cargo, ammunition, fuel, and general stores.

Culinary Specialist (CS)
Culinary Specialists serve as cooks, bakers, and dining area and living quarters managers in the Naval Reserve. Culinary Specialists fill an important and unique role because it is commonly accepted that the dining areas aboard ship are the "heart of the ship" and are key areas to overall morale. Culinary Specialists should be good team players and enjoy working with people. They should have the ability to follow recipes, do detailed work and keep records. Creative ability and an interest in nutrition and culinary arts are also helpful.

Storekeeper (SK)
Storekeepers are responsible for ensuring that all repair parts and general supplies for their assigned Naval Reserve ship, squadron or shore base are accurately ordered, received and issued through the computer systems. In addition, SKs keep budget records for government funds used to re-supply the unit. SKs also learn warehousing, accounting, inventory management and transcription skills.
