The Nightmare
by A.L.Grego

Don't want to close eyes,
Unwelcome sleep-
Dreams plague the mind.
Same one,
Years and ages pass,
No changes,
Running from,
Searching for fredom.
They give chase---
Caring for the children,
Protecting those who are
Too tiny to fight,
Running from-
Fear of being caught.
Tall tunnels.
Water to my waist,
Carrying the children,
Roof slanting,
Metal pillars
Climbing over, swimming under.
Running from---
Possibility of not surviving.
Tears and fears, what a cliche.
They are catching up,
Hearts racing,
Never going to make--
White light ahead.
I can hear them
Not too far behind
All is over .
Going to be caught,
Failed to free,
Everything changes;
Hills, grass, and lush
Mountain peaks behind.
Just me, alone.
Then he's there,
Face is hidden.
Safe and protected;
New scene,
Flying through clouds,
Fast as fast can---
They are chasing,
Catching up,
Whipping through the clouds.
He's with me,
Leading the way-
Hiding in the trees-
Searching for cover.
Blackout---
Hiding from the monsters;
Years pass,
Together
Never truly safe.
Knowing they'll find me,
Catch me,
Take me away.
Always the need to run-
Hide from them.
The things that crawl in the night.
Blackness.
Running helter skelter!
Darkness everywhere,
They have found us!
Bright lights,
City noises, City smells.
No one heeds our fear.
Streets mix,
Dead end,
No where left to go,
They're at the mouth,
Coming closer...
Maliciousness in their eyes.
Go down,
Wake up!
Heart racing, sweat permeating.
Same, always the same----
Nine years,
Never break free.
The secret fear,
Hide it in the recess of mind--
No one should see.
Tell no one!
Can never find peace...
Will I ever be able to move on?
Nightmares,
Make an adult into a child-
The child wants to cry-
The adult fears to.
Never show weakness,
They will give chase, Hunting to the brink Won't let go
Do not cry. Blood
In the water. Pouncing
On the vulnerable.
Exploiting the smallest
crack. To break, to submit.
Monsters ripping out.
Don't expose my heart,
Walls be sturdy,
Stand strong,
And never mention the nightmares.
