As I mentioned in my last update, the theory goes that a team can't win the Championship without having survived a "back up against the wall" moment somewhere along the line. Well, North Carolina now has theirs under their belt courtesy of the most controversial moment of the entire tournament. The Tar Heels escaped last evening with a 67-66 victory over the upstart Villanova Wildcats. UNC lead by 10 with about 2 minutes to play but Nova came battling back and managed to pull within 3 with about 11 seconds to play. On an inbounds play in the Carolina end, Villanova's Allan Ray drove through the lane and was fouled while making a basket, meaning he'd be going to the line with a chance to tie the game. BUT WAIT! The refs are signaling ... A TRAVELING CALL?? WHAT?? Yes, a traveling call on Ray nullifed the basket and gave UNC possesion of the ball, much to even their surprise as replays showed it to be a completely lame call and the basket should have counted. Villanova, true to form, still wasn't done. After UNC made a free throw down the other end, Nova stormed right back with a "three" with about 2 seconds to play. The resulting inbound attempt by UNC was momentarily intercepted by a Villanova player before being deflected out of bounds. Carolina ball. Their next inbounds attempt downcourt was deflected to Villanova who got off a half court shot at the buzzer that sailed wide. Game over. Carolina wins.
By the way, Dave Allard had Michigan State beating Duke and has now opened up an 8 point lead. I'm starting to hate that guy.

NOVA ROBBED! UNC SURVIVES ON BOGUS TRAVELING CALL!
The other big story of the evening was Michigan State's stunning victory over the Evil Empire, aka Duke. Tom Izzo's boys sent the Dukies back to tobacco road in impressive fashion with a 78-68 win last evening. The jury is out on whether the Easter Bunny will now be visiting a certain member of my household. The win sends the Spartans to Sunday's regional final against No. 2 seed Kentucky, who knocked off the Utah Utes 62-52. The winner of that game goes to the Final Four.
In the nights other matchup, the Big 10 continued their tournament run as the #6 Wisconsin Badgers ended NC State's Cinderella bid with a 65-56 victory. Nice comeback by the Badgers who trailed by 9 at the half. Next up for Wisconsin is #1 seed UNC. I'll be rooting for the Tar Heels in that one as I don't think I can deal with notorious Badger fan Don "Ferris" Mueller if Wisconsin were to win this thing.
