MY
SONIC FOUNDRY ACID 4.0 EXPERTISE
Sonic Foundry Acid 4.0 is a loop-based full audio sequencing program. I use this program to compose what I can roughly classify as ambient post-house electronica, a fairly modern style of electronic music.

The program is itself very involved. Somehow, it is fairly easy to figure out, but considering I have been working with the program for a couple years now and STILL find new features and ways to make my music better.

Basically, there are 'loops' of pre-recorded sounds and notes that you can use royalty-free in your compositions. My collection of loops spans two packed CD-ROMS. These loops help build the song by making drum tracks and other sounds easy to add.

You can also add your own recorded audio. I record everything: trombone, piano and guitar being my most common instruments. By writing my own audio on top of the loops, my songs sound much better and are far more personal, although the program can be used very successfully with just the loops alone.

Sonic Foundry Acid 4.0 offers advanced edditing tools. I can have a sound 'move' back and forth from left to right in the stereo field. I can change volume levels on the fly or have them be automated, allowing for professional-sounding fade-ins and fade-outs.

I can also clip and cut audio that has been recorded, removing noise or bad notes as needed. I can copy and 'paste' good recordings over and over again, using my own recordings as loops.

In addition, the sounds from my very basic Casio keyboard come out sounding like the best Korg or Yamaha synths, as I can add multiple effects and automate their activation. Reverb is, by far, the most common and usefull effect, giving otherwise flat sounds a spacious feel, simulating anything from a large concert hall to a wide canyon.

I haven't had the need or the technology to use the video capabilities of this program, but I am told they cover pretty much anything you would want to do with a video.

Still, with my advanced understanding of this program and its capabilities, I am certain that I will only still be discovering more ways to make my music even better with this program for years to come.
PS, I do not get any money for telling you all this. Sonic Foundry does not sponsor my site and likely does not want to be responsible for the views and opinions expressed on my site. Still, I think I have done no wrong in talking about it here. Free speech, right? Hell, for them this is free advertising!
