The Lyons - Savolainen Quartet
Another little South-East-Asian supergroup, this time introducing the awesome talents of the Finnish pianist, Jarmo Savolainen. A versatile composer and player, Jarmo has recorded a substantial portfolio of small to large groups enlivened by a resource of musicians from Helsinki to New York including such luminaries as Dave Liebman, Wallace Roney, Tim Hagens, Rick Margitza, Billy Hart and Ron Mclure. Jarmo's dark brooding style of composition contrasts beautifully with the effusive Lyons style to result in a delicately balanced musical Yin-Yang. The group is rounded out by the substantial playing talents of Malaysian super-percussionist Lewis Pragasam and the American bassist Christy Smith, whose rock-solid bass-lines provide the perfect counterfoil to Pragasam's incessant polyrhythms.
Biophonics
It's party time. This is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. The Biophonics are a collection of the top musicians in the region who have the occasional need to just FUNK OUT and get those dance grooves thumping. Featuring acid-jazz favourites as well as 70's jazz-funk re-visits from the likes of Incognito, Brand New Heavies, Tower of Power, The Brecker Brothers, The Average White band, Groove Collective, The Meters and Earth, Wind and Fire, Biophonics are the perfect band to bring any festival crowd to it's feet. Their first performances in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore provoked some frenzied responses as they offer an extremely broad accessibity with awesome vocal talents, punchy horn arrangements and blistering soloists. Guaranteed to set the standard for combined sensual and intellectual stimulation.
