I like free software, like GNU/Linux. I currently use Debian both at home and at work. I used to use RedHat and Yellow Dog Linux, but I really like Debian. Various people recommend flavors of BSD (FreeBSD, NetBSD, or OpenBSD). I couldn't tell you all the benefits of BSD compared to Linux, but I know the B stands for Berkeley, so it can't be all bad. If you're wondering what "free" means in terms of software, you should visit the fine people at GNU.
We recently bought a Mac Mini, though, and I haven't installed Debian on that. I have, however, used Fink to install a number of pieces of free software that I can no longer live without, such as GnuCash.
You may want to consider protecting your privacy on the internet. One good way to do that is to use GNU Privacy Guard, a free implementation of strong encryption software, if you have to send something private in an e-mail.
If you have your own web page, you may also want to avoid showing your name as [email protected], and instead use a format like myname-AT-some.com. The people who need your address will be able to read it, but computer programs written to search out addresses for spamming may be thrown off. Even better, you can make an image with your e-mail address in it. Humans can read it fairly easily for the most part, but computer programs will have an even harder time. Just an idea.
You should switch to the metric system now. For your information, I am 177 cm tall, with a mass of about 62 kg, and a body temperature that is generally just below 37°C. I try to drink 3 l of water every day. My car drinks about 8 l of gas every 100 km. I would like a car that was half that thirsty.
I am a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists. As you'll see on other parts of my site, I like spending time in nature, so I have an interest in it. Please take care of our world. Drive your car less, recycle as much as you can, and, while you're at it, eat some fresh fruit today. It will make us both feel better.
It bugs me when I visit websites that claim to be "Optimized for Internet Explorer" or "Optimized for Netscape Navigator." These web pages were all written to be compliant with web standards defined by the World Wide Web Consortium. I use the Iceweasel and Firefox web browsers most often, but any browser that implements the WWW standards should work fine for you.
