I waited ten minutes in my stand to give the deer a chance to finish his last moments. I wasn't about to encourage my first deer to get up and run away or put himself in some remote briar covered hole for us to retrieve him from. I slipped down out of the stand and now I was the cautious one. Just as I had thought he was lying where he colapsed.
He was a big deer with several points broken and malformed. If it weren't for his strong muscular neck he would perhaps have had a ten or twelve point rack. As it was he had eight points and would provide a lot of venison for family and friends.
Everything leading to the hunt had been worth it. We now refer to the whole event as part of Ward's Guide Service. My first deer took better than twenty years to get and it may take another twenty to get the second one. I hope that is not the case. But at any rate I owe a huge debt of gratitude to two of the best hunting buddies a hunter could ever have. One was there to watch me do it and the other rooted me on from a greater distance.
