ATHAME - double-edged knife or dagger. A masculine symbol of creative fire, used as a pointer to define space, to inscribe candles, carve runes, cut ritual foods.

BELL - a feminine symbol of the Goddess, usually rung at the beginning and end of a ritual or spell. Used to summon Divine energy and for protection against negativity.

BOLLINE - knife with a white handle used to harvest herbs, slice foods, etc.

BOOK OF SHADOWS OR MAGIC JOURNAL - a private journal of your magical experiences. Rituals, spells, potions and ideas are written in it.

BOWL - represents the power of earth and North point, The universal purifier salt, dry or mixed with water, goes into the bowl. You can also use clean soil instead of salt.

BESOM - was once a wooden staff with a fan of feather (Egyptian), used for protection and purification, made of straw or grass tied around a leafy branch of oak, willow, birch, pine, or fir, used to clean ritual circle of unwanted energies. Called the ‘Faery’s Horse’ the magic broom can be used for astral travel. in handfasting both people jump over the broom to show they are joined as one and to seal their union. Oak besoms are powerful tools for personal protection and is used to draw in ancestral energies and knowledge.

CANDLES - nearly always used in making magic, associated with the fire element. Choose a candle color that matches your magical goal. Dress and empower by anointing with scented oil, starting at the center of the candle and rubbing the oil outward to both ends., while focusing on attaining your magical goal - match scent to goal.

CAULDRON - powerful ritual tool that represents the powers of water and the womb of the Goddess. Used for brewing potions and hold herbs. Candles can be set inside it. Fill with water or oil for scrying.

CHALICE - symbol of water and the west, hold water or wine, sacred vessel made of stone, clay, pewter, silver or glass, representing the Goddess.

CLOAK OR ROBE - used especially during rituals or when making magic potions, spell, etc. It acts like a magical skin. It may be made of any color, fabric, or design. When you put on your cloak, you go into a magical frame of mind.

CORD - symbolic of the cord of life, should measure 9’ long, with a knot at one end to anchor it to a stick, and knots at 4 1/2’, 6 1/2’, and 7 1/2’. It is used to draw a magic circle, a pentacle, or wrap it around the waist of your cloak.

DRUM - a bridge to the Otherworld, associated with the air and earth elements, used for focusing, merging, communication with ancestral spirits, as well as enhancing creativity, astral travel, goal attainment, and divination. Drumming almost instantly puts you into an altered state of consciousness. The head of a person’s drum is broken when they die as a way to free their spirit.

INCENSE CENSOR / INCENSE - it stirs the conscious mind. Associated the fire and air, used on altar to attract helpful spiritual energies. To communicate with the Goddess and God, say prayers and wishes directly into the incense smoke. match the incense to goal. If you are allergic to smoke, you can put a few drops of essential oils into a pot of boiling water.

SCRYING MIRROR - used to look into the future, create protective devices, and help you understand you inner self. You can use a regular mirror, a black mirror or a mirror made of obsidian. Cover with a black cloth when not in use.

OILS AND HERBS - representing the many deities and all the elements, both are valued for their magical properties. A scent can immediately put you in a magical state of mind. Oils are used in ritual baths, sachets, charms, incense, anointing candles, tools, your body. Herbs are used in candle magic, sachets, baths, magic potions, as offerings, in cooking, and in scented oils.

PENTAGRAM AND PENTACLE - The master symbol of the witch is the pentacle - a pentagram with a circle around it. used in magic making. symbolizes the earth and its properties. It represents all of the elemental powers and the human microcosm. Powerful protection device, and to attract Divine energies and manifest your magical desires. Natural pentacles - sand dollars and starfish.

STAFF - tool of authority associated with the earth element, is shoulder height and about 3” thick. Holds and focuses magical energy. May be roughly hewn or carved in intricate pattern and runes. Best cut during a waxing moon and allowed to cure for a complete moon cycle. Named for a particular Goddess or God.

SWORD - powerful and heavy tool of command associated with the Fire element and the south. Used to focus will and magic power, for protection from harmful physical and energetic forces and for tapping into your ancestral power and wisdom. Magnificent for cutting magical circle.

SYMBOLS - magical symbols can be used to add more power and depth to spells, potions, and rituals. A form of magical shorthand, carved on tools, used to consecrate sacred objects, in divination, and for personal empowerment.

TALISMAN - symbol of the earth, made of metal, stone, and other materials, charged with magical properties so that it radiates a specific field of energy. Carried on you or placed on altar during magic making to strengthen the energies you are working with.

WAND - rod of authority and power. Acts as an extension of the practitioner’s body. Associated with east and air element and made from wood. (men - oak, women - birch or willow), no longer than the forearm. Considered the most ancient of tools, used to direct energy, to send and receive patterns from the spiritual to the material plane in such a way as to create a successful outcome in magical workings.
