Altar

Witches gather their magical supplies before they start to do magic, collecting spellbooks, broomsticks, cauldrons, athames, ropes and wands. Wands and athames have the power to open doorways into other dimensions. They draw energy from these other world that affect what’s going on in this world. When doing magic the primary connection is between this world and the world of the Divine or Oneness. Oneness is all things manifested and unmanifested.

When doing magic it is customary to place your tools an the altar. This is a sacred table of the Goddess. The word altar means “high place” which is symbolic in attitude not altitude. I t is a connecting place to Oneness, where the sacred and mundane meet as well as a magical working surface. Standing before your altar you spin spells, make potions, do rituals and ask for Divine guidance.

When building your altar, use a sturdy surface. Every book will tell you a different space in which to set up your altar. Most agree on east or north. The altar should be covered with a cloth, according to the seasons or white. It may be decorated with embroidery or paint. The left side of the altar is the creative, nurturing side, dedicated to the Goddess, while the right is dedicated to the God. Place your tools accordingly.
