May 15 - Mrs. Evelyn Hartwick, recently widowed, buys 127 Bleecker Street and opens the Greenwich Village Newsgirls Lodging House for business.

Her youngest child, Trill Hartwick (age 12), becomes the first newsgirl.

1895

Katherine "Kitty" Wallace moves to the lodging house (age 13).

1896

Footsteps Callaway (age 14) comes to New York and is arrested that very night for sleeping on a park bench.

1897

Footsteps is released from the Refuge and becomes a Greenwich Village newsgirl.

1899

July and August - The Greenwich Village newsgirls participate in the Newsboys' Strike. It ends with slight concessions from Pulitzer and Hearst.

Trill emerges as official leader of the Greenwich girls.
