anyone have a good reccomendation for a website or source for the pluto position essay? I am stuck with where to start, but I am leaning towards the side of Pluto not being included as the ninth planet in our system. . .

bbc is always awesome. and NASA, of course-NASA has the new definition for a planet... and if you search on Infotrac there's a really good article--Newsweek, Sept 4, 2006 p44
Of Cosmic Proportions; Astronomers decide Pluto isn't a real planet anymore. Why they did it--and how our view of the universe is changing. (Cover story) Jerry Adler.
you can just search for pluto and it'll come up with the article...
this article is also good too: The Lancet, Sept 2, 2006 v368 i9538 p828(2)
Pluto left out in the cold. (Comment)(downgrading of Pluto) Stephanie Bartlett.

Hey guys in Purple class
remember how we were wondering how long the CFCs were being used, will i found out that the chemical was first lunched in aerosol cans in 1928 and the last industry to stop using them was in 1996. So, the CFCs were used for about 68 years
hope this helps

by the way, tomorrow morning and Monday morning you can see something that happens only twice a century! Mars, Mercury and Venus will all be lined up so that they will be within 1 degree of each other in the pre-dawn horizon...if you go out with binoculers or even just naked eye you should be able to see them low on the horizon clumped together...not twinkling like stars do...Mars will be the reddish one. Happy early morning viewing!

Ms. Green, Coal #2 is saved as a .cwk (apple works file) and I don't have apple works at home. I sent you a .rtf of the file which is unaltered but can be opened by apple works and Microsoft word. I hope this can allow all people to be able to read it. In the future, I think it could be beneficial to have everybody save as a .rtf so Appleworks and microsoft word can open both kinds of files. WInd #1 and #3 also had 404 errors. I hope this helps.

include all the normal biographical information (website, author, date ect) and then next to that put the name of the two partners where you got the information from. In the article put the numbers pertaining to the source as you did in the 1 pager energy assignment.
List your sources alphabetically and follow the rules in the blue social studies book.

the unit 6 #1 (pages depend on your group)reading is due on the 7th. Read the information under "important info" and click on the link to see what group you are in. It will tell you that your first reading is "glaciers" or "wind" etc. once you find out what section you are reading about first, you check the page numbers that correspond to that topic on the study guide. It is not as confusing as it sounds. You can do it. If you can't figure it out, post again with your name and I will tell you your assignment

Miss. Green, is humidity measured in relative or specefic when we look on websites and weather channel? I keep getting confused.
2007-03-07 23:45:09 GMT
Author:Anonymous
Can someone please tell me why relative humidity is temperature dependent but specific humdiity is not? Thanks.
To Anthony/Paul - the root cause of weathering is the fact that because of erosion/tectonic movements, rocks that was formed deep underground get exposed to the surface. So now, the rocks are exposed to different pressure, weathering agents, different temperatures. The rocks will then "equalize" with their new enviorment and so weathering happens. The deeper the rocks formed, the quicker they erode. I'm pretty sure this is the answer, but check with Ms. Green

2007-03-08 01:24:57 GMT
Author:Anonymous
Anthony/Paul:certain minerals are more susceptible than others because they react with carbonic acid or oxygen.- They react in different ways to weathering than others do. (so they weather faster)

I have a great mneumonic to remember the different kinds of weathering:
FARBU and CO
FARBU= mechanical, CO=chemical
F- frost wedging
A- abrasion
R- root wedging
B- Biological activity
U- unloading
&
C- Carbonic acid
O- oxidation

thanks studying and orangey orang that really helped and studying relative humidity is a ratio of specifis over capacity. Temperature changes capacity. Specific humisity is just the amount of water in the air.

For the discharge lab, what was the theoretical expected results?

Expected results were different parts of the stream does not affect discharge rate. The only reason the real data didn't come out that way because off friction, and other factors etc.

eh? These comments are making me confused! So I think people are getting confused between the theoretical expected result and the hypothesis?
So Ms. Green. Please clarify this for all of us. What's the difference between the theoretical expected result and the hypothesis? Thanks
--Confused more than ever
2007-04-01 22:51:27 GMT
Author:Anonymous
confused more than ever, many of you made a hypothesis without alot of understanding of the topic of discharge rate. In a well researched experiment, the hypothesis and the theoretical expected result would be the same. In this case it was not for many of you because you misunderstood the concept of discharge rate...which is fine, that is why we went over the theoretical expected result as a class.
wondering-being involved in the greenteam did originally carry some extra credit as it was related to the topics we were studying at that time. The group of students unanimously chose to turn the effort into a club...therefor it is now a club and not an extra credit assignment. That said, a part of your grade is participation and personal involvment in the learning of earth science. Many of the students who are involved in greenteam are also constantly demonstrating their involvment in earth science topics and personal learning so while joining does not guarantee any extra credit it can be an opportunity, just like class or before or after school to show your participation and learning.

Which is fastest in a glacier? The middle the bottom or the top?

-glacier girl
2007-04-04 22:55:44 GMT
Author:Anonymous
Glacier girl, there is a whole section of the text devoted to glacial features...i am not sure I understand which ones you are looking for but continental glaciers create roche mountinees, striations, glacial polish, fjords, etc. through erosion and leave behind various morraines, kettles, kames, eskers, erratics, outwash plains, till, and drumlins as depositional features...i just listed those off the top of my head so folks, feel free to add if I missed some.
Blue eyes-you should know any equations we have been working with either in the textbook readings or during lab or class work. Mass wasting is not "best" simply often the first step in the transportation of newly weathered rock...before a mountain can be washed to the sea it has to fall off the mountain to the river...
glacier girl-the middle of a glacier and the top that rides on the middle of the glacier move fastest...the bottom and sides are the slowest...think about it...it will make sense.
Good luck everyone, make sure to study the features and how they formed, the diagrams, etc.I have a free first period so if anyone has any last minute questions you can drop by my office from 7:15-8:30.

studying, what you are looking at is the "master slide" view, change to normal view (in the menu or at the bottom of the window) and you should be able to see everything. If you print handouts like normal it should work too, even if you can't figure out how to switch it to normal view. Hope that helps. IM me if you can't figure it out and I will walk you through it or see me tomorrow morning 7:30 and I will print you a copy.

Does anyone know how to make graphs with more than one trend line? I need to graph the relationship between sunspot number and temperature- but I would like to do it with the date too- so you get two points for each date- one for sunspot number and teh other for temperature.
does anyone know how to do this? I would really appreciate it if you could help

can my ISP intro be more than one paragraph? It makes more sense if i split it up into multiple paragraphs...

number person- i would write out the numbers in every part of your project except for the data analysis- you're analyzing numbers so you can use them lol

binder person- talk to your class secretary or one of your friends- you could meet up and check eachothers binders- to match the assignments up.

Ellie- when you make a graph you can click on custom types and then smooth lines

star light star bright...it is because of the orientation of the earth, sun, stars. all the constellations are out there beyond our solar system, when we are in our summer orientation the constellation orion is right on the other side of the sun so when teh constellation is up, so is the sun. 6 monthes later, we are on the other side so when we turn away from the sun (night) the constellation is visible.

About the previous question, if you go to the URL on the sheet, and use the first pull-down menu to pick the year, you can then get an overview of each storm that year, which tells what categories it reached. That's what I did, but I dont know if that's the best way (or the fastest) to do it.

to the student who posted at 22:44:42 GMT, the post previous has the best way, just click on the hurricane name and it takes you to a summary that has the info in the first few lines.
to the student whou posted at 21:38:35 GMT you know the typical ranges because you have data for several storms this year! No need to research beyond your own data

megan, a scatterplot of 2 variables SHOULD only be one set of points, the pattern that the points make show the relationship, the comparison, if you like that term better. if they are randomly scattered there is no relationship, if they show a slope that heads up toward the right corner that means as one variable increases the other increases, called a direct relationship, the opposite is an inverse relationship. See me if you still have questions.

folks, it is December. We have had 3 tests. You have had 4 months to familiarize yourselves with the website. You were told during class, and for one class, actually shown. The link actually says "unit guides" unit 3. There is an answered post 2 posts above this one with the exact same question. Please use your resources.

The Unit 3 Link IS the study guide. I think i was thrown off by the background and links and stuff, and only just noticed that it IS the guide!!!

so, sorry, that took me a while, but i just want to make sure no one else has that problem!!

Are we going to have the Test on Tuesday still?
I was planning on coming in Monday after schol to review, but there was a snow day!!! Is there going to be another time for reveiew??
I have a 730 day on Tuesday, so I cannot come in early... what should I do? I also think that other students feel the same way, not to speak for others or anyhting.

thanks guys, i had heard this info on NPR but did not have a print article. I especially like that graph showing what the earth's climate would have done with only "natural forcings" like volcanic dust and what has actually occured which seem to point to the extra variable, humans. This remindes you how complicated the climate equations are and why it is not so easy to predict climate change pricice precisely (heck we can't even predict our weather for the week!)

Alexa, I think the arctic circle is the circle that receives 24 hours of daylight during the summer solstice. The Tropic of Cancer receives direct rays from the sun at solar noon during the summer solstice.

On your flashcards it said that the arctic circle received direct rays during to summer solstice, which I think is incorrect.
