and Christmas or just because
Giving green gifts is another great and easy step towards not only saving energy and reducing costs but also lowering emissions and preventing more climate change and global warming.
Everyone loves to save money and have more to put aside for their children's college, vacations with the family or with friends, family activities or not having to worry as much about paying bills or next months rent and have a little more spending money.
PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT: Check out these websites: PowerHouse TV Show, Rona, This Old House and Lowe's and see how you can easily install the thermostat yourself.
FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS: They can be used in traditional light sockets and lamps (in your living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, basement, as oven light, porch light, etc.). They last 10 times longer and use 70% less energy, which means they cause less pollution.
CLEAR SILICONE SEALANT: For a weatherproof and waterproof seal. Use it to fill and seal gaps around windows, doors, vents, fixtures and lights to prevent costly air leakage. If your house isn't sealed properly, it can be costly for you and the environment, because you furnace works even more to keep your house or apartment warm.
WATER HEATER BLANKET: By wrapping your water heater in an insulation blanket, you'll help it work more efficiently. The water will stay hotter longer, so the burner will cycle on less often.
FIBREGLASS PIPE WRAP: To keep pipes insulated.
LOW-FLOW SHOWERHEADS AND FAUCET AERATORS: Low-flow aerators and showerheads reduce water flow and thus, water consumption by as much as 50%.
FAUCET SENSORS: You don't even have to touch it, which saves you the trouble of touching a dirty faucet and saves water because you can scrub your hands all you want without the water running. You should wash your hands for a good 30 seconds. Example of a faucet sensor: Faucet Genie from Canadian Tire.
ENERGY STAR PRODUCTS: They use so much less energy, produce less emissions and save you money. Visit the ENERGY STAR website and click on Products to view their products.
FRONT-LOADING WASHING MACHINE: A front-loading washing machine uses 38% less water and 56% less energy than a top-loading machine, and eliminates 7% more moisture from the clothes.
NATURAL PRODUCTS: Buy your family and friends safe household cleaners, laundry detergent, softener, beauty products, etc., that do not contain chemicals and are environment-friendly.
COMPOSTER: Good for the environment, your garden, and it will reduce waste sent to overflowing landfills.
HYBRID VEHICLES: If you're thinking about giving your son, daughter, wife or husband a car (or other vehicles such as trucks, motorcycles, etc.), consider buying a hybrid vehicle instead of a smog and pollution causing one that increases emissions. Check out Honda, Toyota and Hybrid.com for a list of Hybrid vehicles. Also check out Hybrid vehicles on HowStuffWorks, Pros & Cons, Natural Resources Canada, Hybrid Motorcycles, and eCycle.
BOOKS: Give used books, or if you want to give new books, buy books that are made from recycled paper, also used DVD's, CD's, etc.
