GREENON SPLITS TRI-MEET WITH NORTHWESTERN AND WEST CARROLLTON....

Former Green Bay football coach Vince Lombardi used to say "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing". While that phrase usually holds true, Greenon wrestler Danny Hurtt proved otherwise as his 9-1 loss to West Carrollton's Jamal Buckner clinched a Greenon 41-40 win against West Carrollton in their first match of the evening. The Knights had jumped out to a lead prior to Danny's match, and he entered the match knowing that if he avoided a pin, he would clinch the victory for the Knights. The match turned out to be a gritty performance by Danny as his opponent got him in a near pin situation with 1:20 left in the match; however, Danny avoided the pin and that enabled Greenon to win the dual meet by a final score of 41-40. Greenon Coach Justin Vondenberg had this to say about the match "I thought our guys showed a lot of character. Daniel Hurtt showed some toughness today by not getting pinned to seal the win against West Carrollton." While Danny Hurtt's match clinched the win, Greenon relied on pins from Casey Wells, Kevin Christensen, Zak Worley, Matt Wolf, and Garrett Lay to build their lead against West Carrollton.

The Knights second match of the evening was against CBC rival Northwestern and despite wins from Casey Wells, Kevin Christensen, Nick Anthony, Adam Lawrence, and Matt Wolf, Greenon lost the match by a score of 45-30. Greenon Sophomore Casey Wells had the toughest match of the winners as he held on to defeat Jeb Pencil of Northwestern by a score of 6-5. After the match, Coach Vondenberg stated that " We faced two teams with full teams and came out with a win against one. We are a young and improving team and these guys needed this to help with some confidence. We have the tougher part of our schedule coming up and have a lot of work to do". The tougher part of the schedule begins for Greenon next week as they compete in the Tiffin Invitational on December 27th and 28th.

KNIGHTS NOTES

- Greenon's win against West Carrollton was their 3rd straight win after they dropped their first two matches of the season. Greenon's streak was broken when they lost to Northwestern in the second match.

- Kevin Christensen improved his record to 10-0 as he is on a quest to become the first wrestler in Greenon School history to be a three time state qualifier.

- Freshman Garrett Lay continued to look impressive as he won both of his matches by pin to improve to 9-1 for the season. Garrett is the younger brother of Jeremiah Lay, who was a district qualifier for Greenon in 2003 with a record of 33-11.

- Sophomore Casey Wells was a district qualifier in the 135 lb weight class for the Knights last year. This year he has dropped down to the 125 lb weight class and is 10-1 for the season. Casey comes from a good gene pool as his father Gerald was a district qualifier for the Knights wrestling team in 1974.
