| GREENON TAKES 7th PLACE IN BEAVERCREEK INVITATIONAL........... |
The Greenon Knights wrestling team participated in the Beavercreek Wrestling Invitational this past weekend and came away with two individual champions as Junior Kevin Christensen and Freshman Garrett Lay took first place for the Knights. Other wrestlers placing for Greenon in the tournament were Zak Worley and Nick Anthony with 4th place finishes and Adam Lawrence and Chris Pough with 6th place finishes. As a team Greenon finished in 7th place with 75 points in a meet that was dominated by Miami Trace who scored 224.5 points to take first place. Miami Trace had 5 individual champions and they also placed 8 wrestlers in the finals.
Greenon's Kevin Christensen, who was the # 1 seed in the 130 lb weight class, breezed into the finals with a bye and a 16-2 Major Decision over Sean Szekeresh of Lebanon. In the championship match he was paired up against what looked like a tough matchup against returning state qualifier Matt Cunningham of Miami Trace. Kevin quickly took command of the match as he immediately grabbed a takedown in the first 5 seconds of the match and dominated his opponent throughout with his superior quickness and strength on his way to an easy 13-0 victory. The win improved Kevin's record for the season to a perfect 22-0 and was his third championship in three invitationals this season.
Greenon Freshman Garrett Lay also came into the tournament as the # 1 seed in his weight class and did not disappoint as he advanced to the championship match by pinning Cody Trent of Beavercreek at 1:59 of the first period. In the championship match he defeated Ken Burdiss of Sydney by a score of 9-3; however, during the first part of the match neither wrestler could get a take down. Then about halfway through the period Garrett was able to take his opponent down for a 2-0 lead and he stayed in control the rest of the match as he was ahead 4-0 after one period, 6-0 after two periods, and finally 9-3 at the end of the match. The win improved his record for the season to 16-2 and also gave him his second tournament championship of the season as he had previously won the Xenia Invitational earlier in the year.
