GREENON WRESTLERS GET THREE WINS AT STATE MEET IN COLUMBUS
During the last two seasons, Greenon has sent a total of four wrestler's to the state tournament, however, each season they came home empty handed as they were unable to garner any wins at the State Wrestling Tournament. After sending a school record three wrestlers to the tournament this year, Coach Dooley had higher expectations for his wrestlers this year. He wasn't disappointed.
The 66th Annual State Wrestling Tournament, which was held at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus, turned out to be a memorable trip for the Greenon Wrestling Team as they notched three wins. Freshman Kevin Christensen, wrestling in the 103 lb weight class, won two matches and came within one point of being the first Greenon wrestler to place in a State Tournament since Shannon Willits got a 5th place finish in 1991. Senior Zach Treolo, who wrestled in the 130 lb weight class, picked up the other win with a thrilling overtime win before being eliminated. The team had an overall record of 3-6 and finished tied for 49th out of 80 schools.
Freshman Kevin Christensen added to his impressive season with a win by pin in his first match over Owen Schafer (39-6) of Sandusky Perkins. Kevins next match was against eventual State Champion Pat McLemore (34-0) of Parma Padua Franciscan High School . Kevin fell behind 2-0 after 1 period and 7-0 after 2 periods when his opponent was able to get him in a cradle hold. Kevin fought back in the third period, however, as he outscored his opponent 4-1 in the last period but it was too little too late as he lost the match by a final score of 8-4.
Although Kevin lost the match, it was a morale victory of sorts for Kevin as it turned out to be the closest match of the tournament for the State Champion from Parma High School as no other opponent was able to get closer then 8 points. The loss also meant that Kevin had to fight back from the consolation bracket against Anthony Duffield (31-9) of East Liverpool High School. That match turned out to be a low scoring affair and with 20 seconds left and Kevin clinging to a 1-0 lead, he was able to take down his opponent to seal the win and gain his second win of the tournament by a score of 3-1. That win advanced him to the consolation quarterfinals bracket against a familiar opponent Grahams Aaron Hart. The two freshman had met three times prior to the state tournament, and each time the Graham wrestler was able to squeeze out a victory. The match also was significant in that the winner was guaranteed to place in the State tournament. Kevin was able to wrestle a close, low scoring match against his Graham opponent and he found himself down 2-1 with about 30 seconds left in the match. It was at that point that Kevin appeared in the process of standing up for an escape from his opponent to tie the score when the referee mysteriously blew his whistle to stop the match and reset the wrestlers. After the restart, Kevin was unable to escape and ended up losing the hard fought match by a score of 2-1. The loss eliminated him from the state competition and ended his season with a final record of 38-7. Although Kevin came up short in his goal to place at the State, as a Freshman he has three more shots at qualifying for the State tournament and considering that the best State finish for a Greenon wrestler is 4th in the State, with a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work Kevin could surpass that finish at next years state tournament.
Senior Zach Treolo, who qualified for the District tournament last year as a Junior, capped off an outstanding season by going 1-2 at the State Tournament in the 130 lb weight class. Zach drew a tough opponent in his first match as he wrestled eventual State Runner up Josh Zupancic (41-6) of Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit High School and lost the match in the 2nd period by pin.
Zachs next match was in the consolation bracket against Tim Neill (43-5) of Vincent Warren High School. Zach had faced Tim in last year's District Meet and lost to him 10-2, so he knew he was in for a tough match. After a scoreless first period, Zach quickly fell behind 6-1 in the 2nd period and it looked like his season was nearing an end; however, Zach courageously fought back to tie the score at 6-6. Neither wrestler could score a point in the closing minutes of the match, so the match went into overtime. Zach quickly and aggressively ended the match when he took down his opponent in the first 12 seconds of the overtime period to claim the victory with an 8-6 overtime decision. Zachs season ended when he lost his next match to eventual 5th place finisher Cody Midlam (45-3) of Chaminade-Julianne by a score of 11-0. Zachs record for the season ended up at 38-8.
The other Greenon wrestler to participate in the State tournament was Doug Szczublewski in the 125 lb weight class. Dougs first opponent was Colby Turchetta (29-3) of Twinsburg High School. Colby went on to finish 3rd in the tournament and Doug lost the match by pin to Colby in the first period. That loss set up a match in the consolation bracket against Dominic Spitalieri (36-7) of Akron Archbishop Hoban High School. Doug led most of the match and took a 3-2 lead into the last 30 seconds of the match when he was able to escape from his opponent. Unfortunately, Doug was unable to keep the lead as his opponent got a two point takedown in the last 10 seconds of the match to take a 4-3 lead and the match ended with Doug losing by a score of 4-3. Doug ended his season with a record of 23-10.
WRESTLING NOTES
How rare is it to qualify a wrestler for the State Tournament? Consider this fact this year there were only five wrestlers in Clark County that qualified for the State tournament this season. Greenon had three of them.
If Kevin Christensen can place at the tournament next season, it would be a significant event in the history of the school. Just how significant is it to place at the State Wrestling Tournament for Greenon? The last time a Greenon Wrestler placed in the tournament was in 1991 and only three wrestlers have ever placed for Greenon. Those wrestlers were Shannon Willits in 1990 and 1991 (5th place), Andy Folck in 1982 (4th place), and Dave Helton in 1972 (4th Place).
Greenon drew some tough opponents at the tournament. Kevin Christensen lost to the 103 lb State Champion, Zach Treolo lost to the State Runner Up, and Doug Szczublewski lost to the 3rd place finisher.
The Christensen family has made the State wrestling tournament a yearly family outing for the past three seasons. Kevin Christensen went to the State this year, and his older brother Sean qualified for the State Tournament the previous two years.
Greenon's Zach Treolo and Kevin Christensen both finished with 38 wins this year. It's believed that they both set a school record for victory's with that total.
Greenon had three wrestlers with over 30 wins. Zach Treolo and Kevin Christensen each had 38 wins and Jeremiah Lay had 33.
Kevin Christensen has wrestled Graham's Aaron Hart the past four weekends and although he is 0-4 against him, it's obvious they are evenly matched as three of the losses were by 1 point and the combined scores of all their matches is 18-11.
Over 16,000 people attended the Championship Session Saturday Night to set a new attendance record for a single session. Overall 75,756 people attended the State tournament this year.
