| Greenleaf Coven can trace their roots back to 1974, when Skip and Patty Tarrant first created Ring Coven in Ravenden, Arkansas. At that time, both Skip and Patty were studying under the Church and School of Wicca, run by Gavin and Yvonne Frost. The coven had about nine people at that time. Some of them would travel as far as Columbia and Poplar Bluff, Mo., for sabbats. Ring Coven moved briefly to Springfield, Mo., where they began to become politically active and started making public appearances. They participated in a protest in 1977 when a local church decided it was going to burn "pornographic and occult" books on the town square. They were on all three TV news programs that night. Shortly after this, Skip and Patty made the decision to move to North Carolina. (That decision had nothing to do with the book burning.) In 1978, Ring Coven was dissolved, as Skip and Patty had elected to go their separate ways. They are still good friends today, and from time to time Skip still attends Greenleaf functions. Patty decided to move back to Springfield, Mo., where she began Shadow Coven later that same year. Shadow Coven achieved some notoriety when they were interviewed for a newspaper article for Samhain. Unfortunately, Shadow Coven was dissolved shortly thereafter. Patty (now known as Pat) opted to take a break for a while from the rigors of leading a coven, and focused on her family. Through the eightes, Pat, Kate and Monte did work very closely with a couple of different groups out of Kansas City and St. Louis. Thise people are all still considered good, close friends of the family. In 1988, after living in Texas on her own, Kate decided to move back to Missouri. She had been going to a Baptist church for a while, but quickly learned she didn't belong there. It was when she came back to Missouri that she realized she was much happier as a Wiccan. A few months after moving back, Pat and Kate attended a seminar presented by Gavin and Yvonne in Branson, Mo. It was after this seminar that they decided to become active in the local Pagan community again. They attempted to resurrect Ring Coven with several of the former members, but it soon became apparent that this was not the right time for it. Pat and Kate continued to work with folks from the Springfield area. In 1990, Kate became pregnant. It was then that Pat and Kate decided to form Greenleaf Coven as an educational coven. Greenleaf Coven became an incorporated church inthe state of Missouri in 1994. The church is currently looking for a building in order to create an outreach program for this area in order to continue educating the public about Wicca and Paganism. |
