By universal acclaim, soups and stews are the ultimate comfort food. Mothers bring their ailing children chicken soup, and if they're not being annoyingly loud and obnoxious in the ailing process, they even add dumplings as an extra loving touch. We warm ourselves during icy winter nights with chili, and of course, we all insist our own is the best. We order French Onion Soup in restaurants, reveling in the dark spicy broth and the croutons and the melted cheese. Of all the childhood meals I remember, my mother's soups are remembered with the most fondness. No one does up a soup like a German. Sorry, Grandma Teresa! |
