Ryan Adams-21st January 2004 {Submitted by Rache} Pretty amazing gig last night. Ryan came onstage at 9.45 - resplendent in new gingerish hair, glasses, yellow shirt with writing in marker pen, Dennis the Menace Jumper and suit jacket. Shortish first part of set - 10 songs or so, half of which were acoustic only. Ryan came back on and declared that he was in need of some pot or anything - nothing he had taken had killed him yet and it wasn't gonna happen tonight. Seemed to be in some kind of turmoil and said he didn't know what the fuck he was doing, then said he had been told that he wasn't allowed to talk on this tour so went into a ten minute tale of a robbery from a drunk guy on the mean streets of Bristol after which he dedicated Rescue Blues to the victim of the crime and played it solo until the coda when he got the drummer and bassist back onstage. The three of them then played two or three rehearsal songs (with Ryan on bass and the bassist on guitar for one of them), then another rehearsal song with full band after which Ryan had perked up a bit. He ended up playing and singing the first half of Nobody Girl right in the middle of the crowd (the roadies had to feed out enough guitar and microphone lead to let him get out there) then made his way to the mixing desk and watched the band play the end of the song before having another bit of a chat with us on the mixing desk man's microphone sitting cross legged on the top of his stack of equipment. Then made his way back onstage for a finale of Goodnight Hollywood Boulevard and Sylvia Plath, ending at about midnight. There was a great version of To Be Young in the set somewhere and a fantastic New York, New York - first half acoustic then rocking with the full band at the end. Sorry I can't be more specific about the full set - as far as I could tell there were probably four or five new/rehearsal room songs. 1974 and Firecracker were in there somewhere. |
