Note on above families: DORSEY families descend from Edward Dorsey, "boatright" who first settled Lower Norfolk, Va. prior to 1650, moving to found what became Annapolis, Maryland ca 1650 with the great migration of dissenters who opposed Gov. Berkeley's strict insistence on preaching from the prayer book. This group was offered sanctuary in Maryland by Lord Baltimore, brother-in-law through marriage to Anne Arundel of one of the Lower Norfolk family heads, John Howard. The hugh Howard family moved also to Anne Arundel County, Maryland and are the ancestors of the above Howards. The Beale family (pronounced Bell) are from Ninian Beale, who with Ninian MacGruder provided generations of desendants migrated right along beside Lee, Howard, Dorsey and related families to the Carolinas, Geogia, Alabama and beyond. Gassaway is from Nicholas Gassaway, who in 1792 served as co-regent of Maryland with Nicholas Greenberry. Eley is from Pleasance Ely, who married first a Dorsey and second a Wainwright, was the ancestress of Eley Dorsey (and Eley Gaither and Greenberry Gaither of Putnam County, Ga.) Family lore states Miss Pleasance, of the ancient Isle of Ely in England, was anything but. |
