South Australian

Women's Football League

In 1990 a group of women in South Australia decided to look at putting together a South Australian Women's Football League.

Victorian Women's Football League sent a team of women footballers across the border  to play a demonstration game against South Australian women. With this being a huge success, South Australia were able to gather enough interest from sportswomen throughout metropolitan region to form a league of their own.

Initially starting out with four clubs, the South Australian Women's Football League (SAWFL) has had gradual development over the years. Currently, we have a league comprising again of four clubs  with each player having the opportunity to represent South Australia at the annual National Championships.

In 2004, Adelaide was host the National Championships, and a new era affiliated with the SANFL was born.  In 2006 SAWFL are working closely with the SANFL to further development female participation in Australian Rules incorporating programmes such as AusKick and Rec Footy.

We welcome all girls and women to join the icon sport of Australian Rules Football and any new clubs that would like to participate in the competition.

We're a mighty mob of footballers
And each one is a star
And if you want to join us
You'll find us at the bar
And if you want to join us
You'll find that we're not slack,
And then you'll be a member of
The mighty green and black!

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

Keep your eye on the green and the black!!!
