| Quick Facts -Born in 518 B.C. -Died in 438 B.C. -Born in Boetia, Greece; also lived in Thebes About his Writing Pindar is considered to be the greatest lyric poet among the Greeks. A significant amount of his writing is about vicotories in the Olympics and other games. He also wrote hymns to the gods, dancing songs, and dirges. His writing is different from that of the other poets of his time in that he wrote using a particular word order and paid careful attention to the flow of his poems; however, this word order and flow is lost in translation. More of his work has survived than that of most of the early lyric poets; copies of 45 of his odes still exist. Other Information about his Life Pindar travelled a lot throughout the Greek world. He was held in such high regard by the Greeks that he supposedly received a share of the offerings given to Apollo.
