He is credited with developing the elegiac couplet and the iambic form. His poetry was performed at ceremonies such as military reviews and funerals. He was at one time engaged to Neobule, but Neobule's father changed his mind and agreed to let someone else marry her. Archilochus then did all he could to destroy the reputations of Neobule and her father.
