One of the cool things about this fire season is that we had a helmit cam to try and capture footage for training. The video grab to the left is from one of the first fires of the year. The picture bleow is one our pilots took on the same fire. It is nice as it shows the guy burning out the line behind me. The video grab on the left was taken just as I was entering the field shown below.
Left: This phots was taken just as I was rounding the head. The two areas of flames to my left are actually spot fires.
Yup, thats snow! Farther dwon the left flank of the fire where there was quite a bit of shade with a pine overstory there were patches of snow here and there. As I came up to this it was actually burning on each side so I figured..well, I guess I will furrow right through it! You can hear me laughing about it on the video clip.
When this fire started (below and left) nearly everybody thought it was the next "big one" but fortunatley the fire ran into some hardwoods which slowed it down and we were able to catch it. Below is a photo of our dozers working in the pine along the left flank. Nice photo even if it is blurry.
This is a still from video the pilot took. The video is excellent as it shows the dozer operator working the right flank in this semi open field. While this grab does not show it, the flame heights jumped up to 6-8 feet when the wind gusted.
Well, thats about it for now. I've got a few more pictures to add so you will have to check back later.
Now, this wasnt much of a fire, but we did save a trailer and an outhouse. Not a difficult save but a save none the less. However the out house was a huge save for our own lives. A fact we didnt realize until we looked inside. .....scroll down and see why...
