| The Atlantic Oyster is a marine bivalve that lives on on the ocean floor by cementing its self to a hardb surface.Oysters are primarily found in very cool waters(Canada and Maine). But are more sexualy productive in some what warm waters. In some areas there would be so many Oysters, that they would creat Oyster reefs. With all their many folds and crevassaes,it would be 50 times the surface area of an equally extensive flat bottom. Because Oysters have a very specialized filter system that can pump water at a rate of 5 litters per hour, their main food sourse is Alge,Plankton, and other water born nutrients.Preditors of the oyster are the Wadding Bird(Heamatopus Palliatus),MSX(Hapiosporidium Nesoni),and the Dermo(Perkinsus Marinus). The Oysters mature usually the age one.Oysters are Protandric which means the first year they spawn as males and in the next two years they spawn as females. Bay oysters are ready to spawn by the end of June. When water temperatures increases it triggers male oysters to release sperm and the females to release eggs. This would create a chain reaction making the water cloudy due to the millions of sperm and eggs. A single oyster (female) can release 10-100 million eggs. |
