Use Mage Knight Unlimited rules for anything not otherwise stated hear.

A formation is when a figure is given a attack action and a group of figures contribute to the attack, or when a figure is given and move action and a group of figures move with it.

Restrictions:
All figures of a formation must be form the same faction.  There are only two exceptions to this rule.  The first exception is if a formation has an elite warrior, a figure with two faction symbols on it's base, you may make a formation with figures from the two factions.  eg. Troll Gunner, factions:  Elemental League and Atlantis Guild.  a formation with the Troll gunner can have figures from both the Elemental League and the Atlantis Guild.  This also works with two elite figures sharing 1 faction.  eg. Troll Gunner (EL/AG)  and Troll Zombie (EL/NS), a formation with the Troll Gunner and Troll Zombie can also include figures from the Elemental League, Atlantis Guild, and the Necropolis Sect factions.  The second exception is if a figure has the Command special ability they can make a formation with figures from any faction.  In the first examples if the elite warrior is killed or moved out of position to be in the formationand the formation may only use figures that have the same faction symbol unless there is another elite figure that will allow the formation to stay together.  With multiple elites the formation stays together but the figures that no longer have an elite figure with their faction must be excluded.

Combat Formations:
Primary Attacker: If you give a figure a combat action when he is in a formation with other figures who contribute to the attack, the figure given the action is called the primary attacker.  When preforming a formation attack use the primaty attackers attack and damage value.

Close Combat Formations:
A close combat formation can be formed with a groupe of figures that are in base contact with the same opposing figure.  The attack is the same as normal except all figures in the close combat formation other than the primary attacker add 1 to the attack roll and 1 to the damage roll.

Ranged Combat Formations:
A ranged combat formation can be formed with a groupe of figures that are in base contact with each other.  The attack is the same as normal except all figures in the ranged combat formation other than the primary attacker add 1 to the attack roll and 1 to the damage roll.

Movement formations:
A movement formation can be formed with a groupe of figures that are in base contact with each other.  You give a figure a move action and a group of figures that are in base contact with this figure can move using the same action.  The figures use their own speed value but must end the action in base contact with each ohter.

Shyft:
figures from the Shyft faction can form formations with Mage Spawn, Mage Spawn can't be in a formation without a Shyft or command figure.  The Shyft doesn't need to be in base contact will all Mage Spawn, just one.
