January 1993 Peter Magowan & local ownership group purchase Giants to keep team in San Francisco. New ownership group demonstrates their commitment to finding a new home for the team.
December 1995 Giants announce plans for the first privately-financed Major League ballpark to be built in more than 30 years (Dodger Stadium, 1962). Ballpark to be located at China Basin near downtown San Francisco. Launch Prop B campaign to win voter approval to build ballpark. Unveil design by HOK Sport, architects of Camden Yards, Jacobs Field and Coors Field.
March 1996 Proposition B wins with 67 percent of the vote. City begins environmental review process.
April 4, 1996 Giants and Pacific Bell announce $50 million, 24-year strategic partnership for naming rights of the China Basin ballpark. The ballpark is named Pacific Bell Park.
August 1996 Giants launch sale of Charter Seat Licenses the lifetime rights to the best 15,000 seats in Pacific Bell Park.
September 1996 Giants announce agreement with Chase Securities to provide financing for construction of Pacific Bell Park. Giants select Kajima Urban Development to serve as project developer and completion guarantor. Huber, Hunt and Nichols/Kajima Construction Services is selected as the project's general contractor.
December 1996 Mayor Willie Brown, Jr. announces agreement with the Giants to lease 13 acres of waterfront property located at Third & King streets.
March 1997 Draft of the Environmental Impact Report is published, after 13 months of study of the traffic, ecological and other impacts of the ballpark project. This triggered the public entitlement process.
May 1997 Giants announce sponsorship agreement with Anheuser-Busch for marketing rights at Pacific Bell Park.
September 1997 Giants conclude public entitlement process. Giants win unanimous approval from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, Redevelopment Commission, Port Commission, State Lands Commission, Bay Conservation & Development Commission and Cal Transportation Commission.
November 1997 Giants issue notice to contractor to proceed to construct
Pacific Bell Park at China Basin. Team announces plans for civic celebration
on Dec. 11 to officially break ground for Pacific Bell Park. Team announces
sponsorship agreement with Chevron for Pacific Bell Park. Team begins pre-construction
work on ballpark site.
December 9, 1997 Giants announce 10-year sponsorship agreement with
Visa USA for Pacific Bell Park.
December 11, 1997 Giants break ground and commence construction of Pacific Bell Park.
January 1998 Pile driving begins on Pacific Bell Park. Demolition of
existing buildings on site begins.
February 23, 1998 Homeplate pounded into its final resting place at
Pacific Bell Park.
March 1998 Demolition of site completed.
April 15, 1998 First major concrete pour takes place (800 cubic yards into grade-beam forms in the area behind home plate).
May 1998 First concrete floors are poured behind homeplate and down the right field line.
June 1998 Construction on the main concourse begins.
August 1998 Construction on the Club Level begins. Pile driving completed.
Giants unveil design for Willie Mays sculpture at Pacific Bell Park and announce
change in ballpark's official address from "One Willie Mays Plaza"
to "24 Willie Mays Plaza" in honor of the number Mays wore during
his career. Giants unveil updated design for the Pacific Bell Park Giants Building
to the San Francisco Port Commission. The three-story, 120,000 square foot building,
located along Third Street adjacent to the ballpark, will house a restaurant,
a Giants Dugout Store and the Giants' executive offices.
October 6, 1998 Full-season tickets for Pacific Bell Park go on sale
to Giants season ticketholders.
November 19, 1998 Giants announce unprecedented partnership with CHW Bay Area Region to develop community health center at Pacific Bell Park.
December 3, 1998 Giants announce partnership with Enron Energy Services to become exclusive provider of electricity and facilities management service for Pacific Bell Park.
December 11, 1998 One-year anniversary of ballpark construction.
January 22, 1999 First structural steel is erected on site.
March 22, 1999 First architectural brick pre-cast is placed on ballpark facade.
April 1999 One year countdown until Pacific Bell Park opens. Year 2000
season tickets go on sale to general public.
August 1999 Ballpark superstructure complete. Giants and Pacific Bell
unveil plans for Giant Pacific Bell Park Pitch.
September 1999 First seat installed.
March 31, 2000 Giants dedicate Willie Mays Plaza. Giants play first exhibition
game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
April 1, 2000 Giants play an exhibition game against the New York Yankees
in their first meeting on the West Coast since the 1962 World Series.
April 11, 2000 Giants play the first official game at Pacific Bell Park,
hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers.
