CLASS 5-1600

A limited 4 wheeled vehicle which must be a VW Sedan Type 1 Hardtop, Sunroof, or Convertible.  Previous grandfathering of any vehicles no longer in effect.  All vehicles will conform to printed rules.  This vehicle is setup to have the appearance of a �Baja Bug�.  No Super Beetles, 181 Safaris, Variants or Karmann Ghias.  All parts of the vehicle must remain stock except for state modifications.

WEIGHT - MINIMUM 1700 LBS.

ALL ACR�S APPLY.

FRONT END SUSPENSION
ALLOWED:
1. All parts stock production Type 1 unless modification is allowed.  Type 1 width (34 3/16�) is mandatory.
2. Type 1 or 181 ball joints or link pins.
3. Sway bars may be removed.
4. Front axle torsion tubes may be cut, rotated and re-welded to increase ground clearance.
5. Torsion adjusters.
6. Any tie rod or tie rod ends.
7. Shock towers may be strengthened, extended or replaced.
8. Torsion tubes may be reinforced by attachment to the floor pan and/or roll cage.
9. Torsion bars of any manufacturer.
10. Spindles may be reinforced or replaced.
11. Link pins and king pins of any manufacturer.
12. Suspension limiters.
13. Bushings and bearings any manufacturer.
NOT ALLOWED:
1. Secondary suspensions.  See ACR 45.

REAR SUSPENSION
ALLOWED:
1. Type 1 components stock only. Rear suspension track width must not exceed 51� from backing plate flange to backing plate flange at ride height.
2. Trailing arms may be reinforced.
3. Torsion adjusters.
4. Spring plates of any manufacturer. May utilize additional retaining straps.  Top and bottom stops can be removed as long as stock mount method is used.
5. Conversion of swing axle suspension to IRS by welding tabs to torsion housing in stock location.  Stock geometry must be retained.
NOT ALLOWED:
1. Secondary suspension.  See ACR 45.
2. Removal of material from trailing arms.
3. More than 12� total rear wheel travel.  Bottom to top stop.


SHOCK ABSORBERS
ALLOWED:
1. Any size.
2. Cooling fins.
3. Reservoirs.
4. Front - one shock per wheel.
5. Rear - two shocks per wheel any location.
6. Shock tower in rear may be removed only to the body mounting bolt hole.
NOT ALLOWED:
1. Air or coil over shocks.  See ACR 45.

STEERING
ALLOWED:
1. Steering box of any manufacturer.
2. Any steering wheel and adapter in stock location.
3. Any dampener.
4. Any steering shaft.
5. Sheet metal tube may be removed.
6. Rack and pinion.
NOT ALLOWED:
1. Power steering.

WHEEL AND TIRES
ALLOWED:
1. Any wheel that will mount directly to a VW drum.
2. Only approved D.O.T. tires allowed.  See ACR 5.

BRAKES
ALLOWED:
1. VW Type 1, 2, 3, and 181 drum brakes.
2. Any VW master and wheel cylinders.
3. Any VW drum.  May be machined and studs installed.

WHEEL BASE
Stock measurement must be retained.  See ACR 46.

ENGINE
See ENGINE 1/2/5 - 1600.

IGNITION
See ACR 9.
The use of a distributor in the stock location (i.e.,Type 1 VW Case) is mandatory.  Distributor and coils of any origin and/or manufacturer are allowed.  Capacitive ignition or pointless systems are allowed, but ignition (spark) must be activated off the distributor shaft through the rotor and cap to the spark plugs.

ALLOWED:
1. Battery 6 or 12 volts.
2. Any manufacturer distributor.
3. Any VW type alternator or generator in stock location.  See ACR 23.
NOT ALLOWED:
1. Magnetos and direct fire and multiple coil ignition systems.

FUEL TANK
Fuel cells mandatory.  See ACR 14.

TRANSMISSION
ALLOWED:
1. Stock VW Type 1 or 2 transaxle housing.
2. Four forward gears.
3. Internal/external modifications.
4. any gear combination.
5. Only VW type (helical cut) gears.
6. After market side covers.
7. Any gear shift lever.
8. Stub axle of any manufacturer Type 1, 2, or 181.
9. Any VW CV joint.  Bolts can be oversized as long as engine stays in the stock location.
NOT ALLOWED:
1. Gears other than VW type.
2. 930 CV joints.

OIL COOLERS
ALLOWED:
1. Any manufactured full flow system.
2. location optional.
NOT ALLOWED:
1. Deep or dry sump.

ROLL CAGE
Strengthened allowed by complying with ACR 25.

SEATS
ALLOWED:
1. Any manufacturer.  See ACR 28.

VEHICLE INTERIOR
MANDATORY:
1. Removal of rear seat, upholstered panels, headliners and carpets.
ALLOWED:
1. Roller pedal or stock pedal cluster.  Fore and aft location must remain stock.
2. Dash sheet metal for instrument installation.
3. Air cleaner hose and oil lines may come through the fire wall.
4. Any manufacturer throttle cable.
NOT ALLOWED:
1. Removal of dash and fire wall.
2. More than 1/8� gap around oil lines and hoses through the fire wall.

DOORS
ALLOWED:
1. Stock location only with original hinges and latches in working order.
2. Nets fastened to doors with a secondary latching device.  See ACR 29.



FLOOR BOARDS
REQUIRED:
1. Serial number required on floor plan (easily visible).
ALLOWED:
1. Heating and bending one inch to allow for tie rod clearance.
2. Frame head interchange late to early and vice-versa.
3. Metal of equal thickness can be added to repair rust damaged parts.
NOT ALLOWED:
1. Alterations to pan except those mentioned.

HAZARDOUS PROTRUSIONS - BUMPERS
Adequately safe for front and rear.  See ACR 35.
ALLOWED:
1. Nerf bars to sides in front of rear wheels. Support bar no more than 1/8� clearance between the bar and body.

CHASSIS
ALLOWED:
1. Roof/top can be removed to the car belt line (bottom of side window opening).
2. Sunroof with metal covering.
3. Removal of sheet metal to allow installation of Baja Bug kit.
4. Running board removal.
5. Single piece Baja kit in front.
NOT ALLOWED:
1. Fiberglass body or doors.
2. Canvas hoods.
3. Lift kits.
4. Windshield frame may not be removed.
5. Other body modifications.

FENDERS
ALLOWED:
1. Stock Baja kit type.
2. Any manufactured rear fender.  Metal must have rolled edges.
3. Rear may be mounted 1 1/2� above the body line measured at the top of the fender.  Six inch minimum width measured at the center line of the rear wheel.
4. Package trays (rear) must stay in stock location and stock size.
5. Fender wells may be removed or modified from 1/2� below the stock mounting holes.
6. The hole resulting from removal of the fender well must be covered (air tight) with metal of the same thickness.
