2005 Loon Count
Twenty-Nine people Participated in the 22nd Annual Maine Audubon Loon count on Great Moose Lake on July 16th.  The day dawned clear and calm, a perfect morning for spotting loons.  The official total was 41 adults and 2 chicks.  This is an increase of 6 adults over 2004, but the chicks total is the same as last year.

It appears that 2005 was an extremely difficult year for raising young loons.  Nesting sites which have been used for several years were not found this year, probably due to the extremely high and fluctuating water levels in May and June.  One chick was found with its parents in the marshy area between Harmony landing and Passaconoway Point, but their nest was not located.  As of July 26th, the family was still there.  The other chick was observed riding on its parent's back near French's Rock.  One more active nesting site was found in the Upper Pond near Perkins Landing... but no chicks have been observed in that area yet.  There are two abandoned nests, one with eggs, on the two island near Packard's point.

Twenty nine people, using eleven boats, were involved in counting or observing from the shore.  Thanks to all of you for another job well done.
