Cleveland, Ohio is another one of those communities with the foresight to see the value in preserving our nations naval heritage. Many WW II Fleet subs were the lucky recipients of the legendary Cleveland built General Motors diesels, and the COD was no exception. The citizens of Cleveland also acquired a fine example of a GATO sub with a colorful and important history. The COD is an Electric Boat Company fleet Sub from Groton, CT, like the COBIA in Manitowoc. She sailed 7 war patrols and is credited with sinking 12 ships. The COD is also famous for conducting the only known international sub-to-sub rescuce operation, when she took on the crew of the Dutch submarine O-19. The O-19 had run agound on a coral reef in the South China Sea. COD took on her crew of 56 |
