OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM
O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons' command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free; From far and wide, O Canada, We stand on guard for thee. God keep our land, Glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada!

"O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavalle, a well-known composer; French lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The song gained steadily in popularity. Many English versions have appeared over the years. The version on which the official English lyrics are based was written in 1908 by Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir. The official English version includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. The French lyrics remain unaltered. Heritage Canada
