Musings on music...
No heirachies...
The more I listen to good music, the more I am convinced about the intangible nature of this art form. Most listeners go through these phases where they feel a particular singer is THE best and there can be no others who can come close to them.

Like for example, there would be a time when I would listen to Semmangudi and only Semmangudi all the time...and I would feel that no other singer could come even close to this legend. Then came a phase of only KVN...and nothing else. This phase was closely followed by MDR...and so on.

Now the beautiful thing is that each of these musicians (SSI, KVN, MDR) is so different from the other when it comes to style and still, as I listened to them more and more, their music grew onto me until I was drawn totally into it.

And then I realised that their music was always out there...and it was only ME who was late in realising its beauty :-)

And then I began to wonder...just what is this enigma that we call music??!!

Is there any single best?! To which the answer was clear..NO!!

Each musician had something to give to me...

KVN showed me just what soukhyam actually meant!!

SSI showed me what singing with life and energy was all about.

MDR was shruti and bhaavam personified.

MSS symbolised purity and clarity in every aspect of music.

Ramnad Krishnan embodied grace and finesse.

Brinda was the epitome of aesthetics.

...

And good music lies in each of these musicians.

There are no heirarchies, no ratings, no favorites...only that ethereal art that continues to uplift me when I am down, to calm me when I am restless, to bring to me to the ground when I am flying too high....that enigma which is called Music.

your feeling of music that "..only that ethereal art that continues to uplift me when I am down, to calm me when I am restless, to bring to me to the ground when I am flying too high...."is touching & applies to all singers & listeners.

I agree with you when you say that good music has no heirarchies. I too get 'lost' in the nectar of music of greats like MS, MLV, MDR, SSI to name a few
