Welcome to " The Rock "
Adak , Alaska
This page is dedicated to everyone that  has ever had the joy of living on the Rock or even just visiting there.
I would like to especially dedicate this page in loving memory to ...
DeeDee , Jason , and Jenny
( Lost at sea 27 September 1985 )
You will never be forgotten !!
This is the rainbow that suddenly appeared the day we said 'goodbye' to our dear friends.
Those of you that went to our little memorial at the beach that day , will remember this rainbow forever.
OUR DEAR YOUNG FRIENDS...
DeAnna Jo Slead    ( born 7 October 1970)
Jason Charlse Mathis   ( born 11 August 1970)
Jennifer Gail Roberts  ( born 24 November 1971 )
The sea was breaking at my feet,
And looking out across the tide,
Where placid waves and heaven meet,
I thought of me on the Other Side.

For on the beach on which I stood
Were wastes of sand, and wash, and roar,
Low clouds, and gloom, and solitude,
And wrecks, and ruins - nothing more.

" O tell me if beyond the sea
A heavenly port there ! " I cried,
And back the echoes laughingly
" There is ! there is ! " replied.

I lived on "The Rock" (Adak)  from August 1984 to March 1986.
When I first arrived there I wasn't so sure that I would want to stay. But then as a few months passed and I made new friends I realized that this would be a great experience. The people on the island where some of the friendliest people I had ever met. I didn't know then if it was because everyone felt as tho they were all there on this little rock together without much contact from the rest of the world. Or if maybe it was just the character of military personnel.
In hind sight I would definately say that it was a combination of the two.
I still remember the day I said goodbye to Adak. It was a very sad March day. All my friends had gathered at my home that morning and saw my family and me off to the airport.
Soulful talks about all our Adak memories and promises to keep in touch filled the air as I waited for my plane with a tear streaked face and Hugs and Kisses aplenty!
Looking back on my Adak days I feel in heart that my time there on that rock was 2 of the best years of my life. Through the blustering rain and precious shine...williwa wind and
raging snow...good times and even the sad times...I held the island in the palm of my heart knowing that this place would a part of my life always.
ALAWAYS REMEMBER...That it takes both rain and sunshine to make a rainbow!

On the left was the Bering Building that housed the Husky Club, a movie theater, bowling,
Baskin Robbins Ice Cream,
and the "Williwa" which was a food service area.
On the right was the enlisted Marine barracks.
There was an underground tunnel that connected the two buildings to shield people from the sever weather that Adak often encountered.
