It was low key advertising. The only way you'd know The Grapes Of
Wrath were back in town would be if you had seen one of their few
posters on a Victorian lamp-post. Yet, the line-up stretched out in front
of The Limit nightclub long before the doors opened. "Did you see
them?" chirped an excited female fan who had caught a glimpse of the
band earlier on during the day. "I can't believe they're back!" added a
friend. The excitement was high, and the fans were not going to be
disapointed! Pulling a mix material from all four albums, the reunited
chums from Kelowna had something to offer each and every person in
the audience. They walked out on stage, and without a word, they
broke into "Realistic Birds", and went straight into "A Very Special
Day" without a breath of air. Next came "Stay". The crowd imediately
recognized this one, and the sing-along began. The band played most
of their hits (except for "O Lucky Man" much to the disapointment of a
more than slighty tipsy fan who decided to sing it to Kevin Kane since
they weren't going to do it!). Songs like "Do You Want To Tell Me",
"You May Be Right", "Peace Of Mind", "Backward Town", and "I Am
Here" still got the biggest responses, although many long-time fans
were also thrilled by such gems as "Away" and "Seems Like Fate". The
new songs were all well received (especially Kevin's new
'destined-to-be-a-Grapes-classic' "Rivers Flow"). The acoustic guitars
came out for a mini unplugged set that consisted of "Backward Town",
"All The Thing's I Wasn't" and "What Was Going Through My Head".
This portion of the show resembled a campfire singalong as everyone
who knew the words (and a few that didn't) happily sang along. They
played for nearly an hour straight, and then returned to the stage for a
three song encore. "Lucifer Sam" (an old Pink Floyd song), "Gone" and
"Misunderstanding" ended the night. As the club died down and the
fans started to file out, everyone had a smile on their face, for the magic
was back.
